UP Board Rolls Out Major Security Overhaul for High School and Intermediate Exams

In a decisive move to combat answer sheet swapping and misuse, the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Board (UP Board) has introduced a comprehensive set of new security features for the ongoing High School and Intermediate examinations, which commenced on February 18. This initiative, approved by Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh, aims to fortify the integrity and transparency of the examination process across the state.

Enhanced Security Markings and Vertical Format

For the first time in its history, the UP Board has printed answer books in a vertical format, incorporating sophisticated security markings designed to thwart duplication or replacement. All pages now feature thin margins on the left side and at the top, within which the words "UP Board" are printed in fine English lettering. These markings are not easily visible to the naked eye and require special effort to read, making unauthorized replication of answer sheets extremely challenging.

Color-Coded Instructions to Deter Cheating Syndicates

To prevent the use of old answer books by organized cheating rings, the board has implemented a new color scheme for the instructions and details printed on the cover pages. For High School examinations, the main answer book now displays details in brown, while the supplementary ‘B' copy uses green. For Intermediate examinations, the main answer book features pink details, and the ‘B' copy is marked with sky-blue details. This color coding system is intended to help invigilators and examiners quickly identify genuine answer books and detect any discrepancies.

Standardized Page Counts and Barcode Authentication

The board has also standardized the number of pages in all answer books to ensure consistency and prevent tampering. High School main answer books contain 16 pages, including the cover, while Intermediate main answer books have 32 pages, including the cover. Both High School and Intermediate ‘B' copies consist of 12 pages each, including the cover, with the total page count clearly mentioned on the cover page.

Additionally, barcodes have been placed on the cover page and the last page of every answer book. Scanning these barcodes will reveal whether the answer book belongs to the High School or Intermediate examination, thereby confirming its authenticity as an official UP Board document and providing a reliable method for verification.

Improved Student Detail Entry and Overall Impact

Another first-time feature is the introduction of small, clearly defined boxes on the answer sheets for students to fill in essential details such as roll number, examination medium, centre code, question paper code, exam date, shift, and the number of supplementary answer books attached. This structured approach is expected to minimize errors and streamline the examination process.

The UP Board believes that these multifaceted measures—including the vertical format, hidden security markings, color coding, standardized pages, barcodes, and improved detail entry—will significantly reduce irregularities and ensure the fair conduct of examinations. By addressing vulnerabilities in the system, the board aims to uphold the sanctity of the examination process and restore public confidence in the state's educational assessments.
