Capacity Building Programme Empowers 50+ Educators on Student Mental Health
Training Programme Held for Teachers on Student Mental Health

In a significant step towards strengthening the support system within schools, a dedicated capacity building programme was recently conducted for educators. The session focused on equipping teachers with the necessary tools and knowledge to promote mental health and well-being among their students.

Programme Details and Expert Guidance

The programme was organised under the auspices of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in Chandigarh. It brought together more than fifty participants, including master trainers, special educators, and resource persons from the SSA. The primary objective was to create a cadre of trained professionals who can identify and address the mental health needs of school children effectively.

Leading the insightful sessions was Dr. Bhavneet Bharti, a Professor from the Department of Pediatrics at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. Dr. Bharti provided a comprehensive overview of the current mental health landscape among young people. She emphasized the critical role educators play as first responders in recognizing early signs of psychological distress, which can often manifest as changes in behaviour or academic performance.

Strategies for a Supportive School Environment

A core component of the training involved practical strategies for fostering a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere. Experts outlined methods to build emotional resilience in students, helping them cope with academic pressure, social dynamics, and personal challenges. The programme stressed the importance of moving beyond academic instruction to include emotional and psychological support as a fundamental part of education.

Participants were engaged in discussions on creating safe spaces where students feel comfortable expressing their concerns. The training also covered basic intervention techniques and guidelines on when and how to refer students to specialized mental health professionals for further support.

Expected Outcomes and Future Impact

The capacity building initiative is expected to have a ripple effect across schools in the region. By empowering these master trainers and resource persons, the programme aims to disseminate knowledge and best practices to a wider network of teachers. The ultimate goal is to integrate mental health awareness into the daily fabric of school life, ensuring that student well-being is given paramount importance.

This initiative aligns with broader national and global efforts to prioritize mental health in educational settings. It recognizes that a healthy mind is essential for effective learning and overall development. The successful conduct of this programme in Chandigarh sets a precedent for similar training workshops across other states, highlighting a growing commitment to nurturing not just the intellectual but also the emotional growth of India's future generations.
