Surat Expands AI & Robotics Labs to 6 More Schools, 5000 Students to Benefit
Surat adds 6 more AI, robotics labs in municipal schools

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is taking a significant leap forward in democratizing advanced technology education. In a move designed to empower students from economically weaker sections, the civic body has announced the expansion of its specialized laboratories for cutting-edge technologies to six additional municipal schools.

Bridging the Digital Divide with Hands-On Tech

This expansion builds upon a successful existing initiative. Previously, SMC had established 12 such advanced laboratories across its network of municipal schools. These facilities have already made a substantial impact, providing crucial training to nearly 11,000 students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds and upskilling approximately 230 teachers in emerging technological domains.

The new phase of growth is set to widen this reach considerably. The six new laboratories are expected to benefit an additional 5,000 students and 65 teachers from the secondary and higher secondary sections. The core objective remains clear: to equip young minds with future-ready skills and reduce the digital literacy gap that often affects underprivileged communities.

What the Futuristic Labs Offer

The laboratories are not theoretical classrooms; they are hubs of practical, hands-on learning. Students gain direct experience through well-equipped kits in four key areas:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) principles and applications.
  • Robotics, including building and programming.
  • Operating and understanding drone technology.
  • Designing and creating objects using 3D printing.

To ensure high-quality instruction, SMC engages professional subject experts. These experts conduct training sessions for both teachers and students, fostering a cycle of continuous learning and skill development. Furthermore, the initiative includes a unique co-teaching support model where industry professionals assist in classroom delivery, enhancing practical exposure and linking academic concepts to real-world applications.

A Pioneering Model for State-Level Education

SMC officials have highlighted that Surat has taken a pioneering lead in the state of Gujarat by systematically integrating such advanced science and technical education within the municipal school system. This strategic focus aims to prepare students for technology-driven careers of the future, ensuring they are not left behind in an increasingly digital economy.

The initiative represents a forward-thinking investment in human capital. By providing access to AI, robotics, drone, and 3D printing labs, SMC is not just teaching subjects but is actively shaping a more inclusive and skilled future workforce for Surat and the nation.
