The Odisha government has launched a significant initiative to preserve the state's educational heritage by identifying 50 Odia-medium schools that are a century old or more for comprehensive conservation. This ambitious project falls under the Aitihya Vidyalaya scheme, which was officially launched in November last year. The primary goal is to safeguard the existing infrastructure of these historic institutions while simultaneously enhancing their academic environment to meet contemporary standards.
Preserving History, Building the Future
The state administration has earmarked a substantial ₹60 crore for the scheme in the 2025-26 financial year. An official from the school and mass education department emphasised that this is a focused effort to protect Odia-medium high schools with over 100 years of legacy. However, the scheme also includes a provision for districts lacking a century-old school; in such cases, the oldest government high school in the area will be selected for conservation. The official highlighted the profound role these schools have played, stating they have been instrumental in shaping the social fabric of Odisha. The government's vision is not merely to preserve them as relics but to develop them into centres of excellence.
Implementation and Feasibility Study
The responsibility for executing this landmark project has been entrusted to the Odisha Bridge and Constructions Corporation (OBCC). The corporation has initiated the process by calling for a detailed feasibility study. This study will form the basis for preparing comprehensive project reports in consultation with technical experts specialising in heritage conservation and cultural preservation. A critical component of this assessment will involve mapping the current student strength and understanding the evolving academic needs of these institutions. Furthermore, analysts will identify gaps between the existing facilities and the infrastructure required for modern education.
Modernisation Alongside Conservation
While the historical character of these schools will be preserved, the plan includes significant upgrades to ensure they are fit for the future. The official pointed out that many of these schools still operate from their original buildings, which now require thorough structural assessments for safety. The conservation work will ensure the schools are structurally safe, comply with all statutory requirements, and can fulfil modern educational needs. The upgrade plan is holistic, envisioning the integration of new, sustainable structural elements. These include systems for rainwater harvesting and solar power integration, blending heritage preservation with ecological responsibility and modern amenities.
