Jaipur Education Department Reverses Controversial Directive on Teacher Deployment for Religious Event
The education department in Jaipur has officially withdrawn a contentious order issued by the Chief Block Education Officer (CBEO) in Nainwa, Bundi district, that required the deployment of teachers and educational staff for a religious program. The controversial directive, which was issued on Monday, mandated the deployment of government employees from February 2 to February 7 at a temple located in Bansi village. However, following intense scrutiny and public outcry, the order was rescinded late Tuesday. A senior official from the education department confirmed the withdrawal, stating, "The matter came to light on Tuesday, after which the officer concerned was directed to withdraw the order." The official further emphasized that the CBEO had failed to obtain necessary approvals from higher authorities before issuing the directive, highlighting a procedural lapse in the decision-making process.
Political Opposition and Allegations of Norm Violations
The order faced severe criticism from various quarters, most notably from the opposition Congress party. Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Tikaram Jully, strongly condemned the directive, labeling it as inappropriate and in clear violation of established service norms. Jully argued that involving government teachers in non-academic religious activities poses a significant threat to the secular nature of the education system. "This is not a one-off incident. Such actions are being repeatedly seen under education minister Madan Dilawar," Jully alleged, suggesting a pattern of similar occurrences under the current administration.

OP Bunkar, the CBEO who issued the order, defended his actions by attributing the episode to "human error." He claimed, "It was a mistake that occurred in the rush of work; as soon as the issue was highlighted, I cancelled the order the same day." Despite this explanation, the incident has sparked broader concerns about accountability and oversight within the education department. While teachers' organizations have welcomed the withdrawal of the order, they are advocating for the establishment of clear guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.
