Kolkata: Undergraduate students at Calcutta University will now receive a clear academic calendar before the start of the new session, ensuring they do not face difficulties due to sudden examination announcements. The university has prepared an academic plan for each semester, including the expected number of classes and the start of examinations.
Proposed Examination Dates Released
Recently, the university released a notice stating that the proposed start date for semester 4 practical examinations is July 29, while theoretical examinations will begin on August 13. The notice also outlined proposed dates for semester 2 examinations: practicals from September 8 and theoretical exams from September 18.
Vice-Chancellor's Statement
Calcutta University Vice-Chancellor Sutoshu Ghosh said, “This is our first step towards implementing an academic calendar for undergraduate courses, which was much needed for students under the semester system. The academic calendar will shortly come into effect. It will include the number of classes to be covered for each semester, and the commencement of exams will be clearly mentioned. Students have the right to know the tentative dates of the exams; otherwise, how will they prepare?”
Background of Student Agitations
In recent times, the College Street campus has witnessed several student agitations demanding that exams be deferred. In some cases, the university has had to shift exams by at least a few days. For instance, the sixth-semester exams had to be pushed back by a week after back-to-back student protests.
Impact of Academic Calendar
Ghosh added, “In recent times, we saw students’ protests demanding the exams be deferred. This unrest will stop if they get tentative dates two or three months in advance. This is the first step; it will be clearer to them after they receive the academic calendar.”
