The sporting spirit of young India ignited in Ludhiana as the 69th National School Games commenced with great fanfare on January 6. The grand opening ceremony, held at the Guru Nanak Stadium, set the stage for six days of intense competition and cultural celebration, organized by the Directorate of School Education under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI).
Grand Inauguration and Minister's Vision for Sports
The stadium came alive with vibrant cultural performances as students from across the nation welcomed dignitaries. The ceremony was marked by energetic Giddha and Bhangra presentations by students from eight schools in Ludhiana. A highlight was the torch-lighting ceremony, led by medal-winning athletes from national and state-level contests, formally declaring the games open.
Punjab's Education Minister, Harjot Singh Bains, who inaugurated the event, made a significant announcement. He revealed that 3,100 new sports stadiums are currently under construction across Punjab as part of the state government's push to bolster sports infrastructure. Minister Bains emphasized the crucial role of sports in building character, instilling discipline, and keeping the youth healthy and away from drugs.
Logistics, Participation, and Venues
The event has drawn massive participation, with approximately 38 teams from various states, union territories, and organizations. Officials estimate that between 1,000 to 1,200 participants, including school officials, will be part of the six-day sporting spectacle until January 11.
Elaborate arrangements have been made for the athletes' stay and sustenance. Participants are being accommodated in 34 government schools across Ludhiana, while a dedicated mess at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is catering meals. The administration has also ensured transportation facilities for all students and staff.
Competition Schedule and Disciplines
Young athletes will vie for top honors in three martial arts and sports disciplines at three primary venues:
- BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar
- Government Senior Secondary School, PAU
- Open Air Theatre at PAU
The competitions are structured by age categories: Gatka will feature Under-19 boys and girls, Judo will see Under-14 boys and girls in action, and Taekwondo will include Under-14 girls.
