Varanasi Teacher Honored with Prestigious Vidya Stree Award at IIT Madras for Educational Innovation

In a significant recognition of educational excellence, Tuba Asim, a teacher from a government school in Varanasi, has been honored with the Vidya Stree award at IIT Madras. This accolade celebrates her groundbreaking work in integrating new technology and innovation into teaching methodologies for children under the Basic Education Department.

Innovative Teaching Through Simulation

Tired of conventional methods, Tuba Asim developed the concept of experiment through simulation, providing an easier and more engaging way to educate students. This simulation technology empowers children to explore the 'why' and 'how' behind scientific principles by conducting virtual experiments themselves. Beyond student instruction, Asim has also trained fellow teachers at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), fostering a collaborative environment for digital learning.

Government Emphasis on Digital Education

The Yogi government is strongly emphasizing the digitalization of education, in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020). Key initiatives include the establishment of smart classrooms, teacher empowerment programs, and foundational development aimed at promoting digital, inclusive, and skill-based education across Uttar Pradesh.

Basic Education Officer Anurag Shrivastava highlighted that Asim, who teaches at PM Shri Composite School in Gangapur, Varanasi, received the award in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and simulation. This recognition was jointly conferred by Vidya Shakti and the IIT Madras Pravartak Technology Foundation.

Shrivastava further noted that students in PM Shri schools, upper primary schools, and composite schools are being taught using modern mediums and ICT tools. These include Interactive Flat Panel Displays (IFPD), AI platforms like Gemini and ChatGPT, NotebookLM, the Diksha App, and simulation portals such as OLab, PhET, and SimPop, all utilized effectively for educational purposes.

Digital Initiatives and Benefits

Tuba Asim commented on the government's concrete steps to promote digitalization in basic education. Under these efforts, children are gaining proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics through digital modules and apps. The provision of tablets and e-learning materials has made digital education accessible even in rural areas, ensuring broader benefits for students across the state.

Vidya Shakti: A Major Free Digital Education Initiative

Started in 2023, Chennai's Vidya Shakti is a prominent free digital education project. Shiva Subramaniam S, the global convenor and operations head, explained that there is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government, IIT Madras, and the OpenMentor Trust in Chennai. This initiative focuses on teaching mathematics, science, and English online to children from Class 6 to 8.

The primary objective of Vidya Shakti is to strengthen the foundation of basic education, aiming to reduce dropout rates before college and increase the gross enrolment ratio in higher education institutions. Currently, more than 50,000 children across 353 schools in Varanasi are benefiting from this free scheme, showcasing its widespread impact.

This award and the associated initiatives underscore a growing commitment to transforming education through technology, ensuring that students in Varanasi and beyond receive quality, future-ready learning experiences.
