Tripartite Agreement Launches STREE Project for Rural Women's Empowerment in Dhamtari
In a significant move towards advancing rural women's empowerment, a landmark tripartite memorandum of understanding was signed on Wednesday between NIT Raipur, the Dhamtari district administration, and BRP government polytechnic college. This collaborative initiative marks the official launch of the STREE project, which is specifically designed to build sustainable livelihoods for women across the district.
Project Aims to Transform Lives of 300 Rural Women
Officials have revealed that the ambitious STREE project has set a clear target of making 300 rural women economically self-reliant through comprehensive skill development programs. The initiative will place special emphasis on women from deprived communities, tribal populations, and agriculture-based households, ensuring that the most vulnerable segments of society receive focused attention and support.
The training curriculum will be extensive and practical, covering multiple aspects of the kosa silk value chain. Participants will receive instruction in cocoon processing, fibre extraction techniques, modern weaving methods, product design principles, entrepreneurship development, and crucial market linkage strategies. This holistic approach ensures that women gain not just technical skills but also the business acumen needed to succeed in competitive markets.
Three-Year Implementation with Substantial Financial Backing
The STREE project—whose full name is Skill Development Through Technological Resources for Empowering Economic Growth of Women—will be implemented over a substantial 36-month period. The initiative has secured financial support of approximately Rs 90 lakh (9 million rupees) under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research's TDUPW-A2K+ programme, which operates under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
This funding demonstrates the government's commitment to leveraging scientific and technological resources for social empowerment, particularly in rural areas where traditional livelihoods often face challenges from modernization and market pressures.
Official Signing Ceremony and Strategic Vision
The memorandum of understanding was formally signed at the Dhamtari collectorate in a ceremony attended by key stakeholders. The signatories included NIT Raipur Director N V Ramana Rao, Collector and District Magistrate Abinash Mishra, and the principal of BRP government polytechnic college.
Collector Abinash Mishra emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration, noting that Dhamtari district possesses strong potential in both handloom traditions and farm-based livelihoods. He explained that the STREE project would help refine and enhance local skills through scientific and technical support from educational institutions, ultimately improving women's incomes and strengthening their socio-economic position within their communities.
This initiative represents a model partnership between academic institutions, district administration, and technical colleges, creating a synergistic approach to rural development that could potentially be replicated in other regions facing similar challenges. By combining traditional knowledge with modern techniques and market access, the project aims to create sustainable economic opportunities that will benefit not just individual women but their entire families and communities.
