Rajasthan University Staff Stage Protest Over Alleged Land Transfer of Constituent Colleges
In a significant demonstration of dissent, teachers and retired staff of Rajasthan University gathered on the campus in Jaipur on Thursday to protest against the state government's alleged transfer of ownership of two key constituent colleges. The protest targeted the reported handover of Maharani College and Maharaja College to the Jaipur Municipal Corporation and the Jaipur Development Authority.
Protest Details and Leadership
The demonstration was organized at the main gate of the university campus, drawing participation from faculty members, pensioners, and non-teaching staff. Led by Prof HS Sharma, president of the University Pensioners Association, the protesters voiced strong opposition to what they described as a "secretive" decision made without proper consultation.
Naveen Sharma, president of the Rajasthan University Teachers' Association, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "The transfer amounts to a direct attack on the institution's rights and properties." Participants warned that this move could severely undermine the university's autonomy and control over its valuable assets.
Background and Historical Context
This protest follows a controversial land transfer that occurred in June last year, where 48 bighas of Maharaja College and 29 bighas of Maharani College were reportedly transferred to the JDA and JMC. The issue has escalated due to the significant heritage and financial value of the land involved.
Bhupendra Singh Shekhawat, former public relations officer of Rajasthan University, highlighted the stakes in a letter to the Governor and Vice-Chancellor. He noted, "In the current scenario, it became necessary for a high court judge to investigate this issue, as the land is worth thousands of crore and holds heritage value as two premier higher education institutes of the state." Shekhawat has formally requested the Governor to direct a judge of the Rajasthan High Court to probe what he termed a "serious land scam."
University's Response and Appeals
In response to the escalating tensions, professors at Rajasthan University have taken formal steps by writing to syndicate members and Governor Haribhau Bagde, seeking urgent intervention. They argue that the transfer not only threatens the institution's operational independence but also jeopardizes the educational legacy of these historic colleges.
The protest underscores broader concerns about governance and transparency in higher education management in Rajasthan. As the situation develops, stakeholders continue to call for a thorough investigation to address the allegations and protect the university's interests.
