IIT Kanpur Launches Mental Health Centre with 24/7 Support

IIT Kanpur Establishes Dedicated Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing

In a significant move to enhance student welfare, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has officially transformed its Institute Counselling Service into the comprehensive Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing (CMHW). This strategic expansion and restructuring underscore the institute's deep commitment to fostering a supportive campus environment for its entire community.

Enhanced Clinical Support Structure

The newly formed CMHW boasts a robust team of mental health professionals dedicated to providing continuous and specialized care. The centre is staffed with ten full-time psychologists, one full-time psychiatrist, and three consultant psychiatrists. This multidisciplinary team ensures that students have access to both immediate clinical support and long-term, specialized interventions whenever necessary, promoting a holistic approach to mental wellness.

24/7 Accessibility Through Strategic Partnership

Recognizing the critical need for round-the-clock support, IIT Kanpur has entered into a pivotal partnership with YourDOST, a leading third-party counselling and emotional wellness platform. This collaboration guarantees that telephonic and online counselling services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making mental health resources accessible to every student at any time, thereby removing barriers to seeking help.

Proactive and Preventive Initiatives

Beyond clinical services, the institute has implemented a series of preventive measures aimed at building mental health awareness and resilience across the campus. The CMHW organizes regular sensitization programs for both students and faculty, along with interactive workshops, hall visits, and open dialogue sessions. These initiatives are designed to destigmatize mental health discussions and encourage proactive conversations about wellbeing, creating a more informed and empathetic community.

The establishment of the Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing marks a proactive step by IIT Kanpur in addressing the growing mental health needs within academic environments, setting a benchmark for institutional support systems nationwide.
