CBSE Class 12 Result 2026: Girls Lead, Pass Rate Falls

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced the Class 12 results for the year 2026 on its website, cbse.gov.in. A total of 17,80,365 students registered for the board examinations, out of which 17,68,968 appeared for the tests. Among those who appeared, 15,07,109 students successfully passed the examination, resulting in an overall pass percentage of 85.24%.

Compartment Category Details

This year, 1,63,800 students were placed in the compartment category, accounting for 9.26% of the total candidates who appeared. These students are now eligible to appear for the compartment examinations scheduled later to improve their scores. Students can access their scorecards through the official CBSE website, DigiLocker, or the UMANG app.

Gender Performance Analysis

Girls have once again outperformed boys in the Class 12 examinations. The pass percentage for girls stood at 88.86%, significantly higher than boys at 82.13%, creating a gender gap of 6.73 percentage points. This trend continues a long-standing pattern of female students achieving higher academic success in board exams.

According to CBSE data, the pass percentage for girls declined from 91.64% in 2025 to 88.86% in 2026, while boys saw a drop from 85.70% to 82.13% over the same period. Despite the decline, the performance gap between genders remains substantial, highlighting the consistent academic dominance of girl students in senior secondary education.

Notably, transgender candidates achieved a 100% pass percentage for the second consecutive year, reflecting inclusive educational progress.

No Toppers List Released

In a significant move, CBSE did not release an official merit list or toppers list this year. The board stated that this decision was aimed at preventing unhealthy competition among students. However, merit certificates will be issued through DigiLocker to the top 0.1% of students in each subject, recognizing exceptional performance without public ranking.

Importance of Class 12 Results

The Class 12 results are critical for undergraduate admissions in universities across India and abroad. The gender-wise performance data serves as a key indicator of educational trends and has been closely watched by education experts. They have noted changing classroom dynamics, improved participation of girls in higher secondary education, and stronger consistency in board exam performance among female students.
