Gujarat University Students Confused Over NEP Honours Degree

Ahmedabad: Students enrolled in arts, commerce, and science colleges affiliated with Gujarat University are facing significant confusion regarding the option to pursue a four-year honours degree under the New Education Policy (NEP). Those who began undergraduate programmes in 2023 are currently sitting for their final semester exams, yet there remains a lack of clarity about the availability of the optional fourth-year honours track.

University Circular and College Responses

Recently, the university issued a circular inviting applications from both granted and self-financed colleges willing to offer the fourth year, comprising the seventh and eighth semesters, under the BS programme. This includes courses such as BBA and BCA. Colleges have been asked to respond by May 11. However, it remains uncertain how many institutions will opt to introduce this additional year.

Incomplete Implementation of NEP Framework

Under the NEP guidelines, universities were expected to provide both three-year degree programmes and an optional four-year honours programme. Students who complete four years would receive an honours degree, making them eligible for a one-year postgraduate programme. Despite these provisions, the implementation appears incomplete. Sources indicate that the university currently lacks data on how many students are interested in pursuing the honours year. Additionally, many colleges have reportedly not responded to earlier requests for information regarding their readiness to offer the programme.

Faculty Constraints and College Hesitation

Colleges are hesitant to introduce the fourth year due to faculty constraints. Extending programmes to four years would require additional teaching staff or an increased workload for existing faculty. As a result, the effective implementation of NEP provisions is facing significant challenges, leaving students uncertain about their academic future.

Students are advised to stay in touch with their respective colleges for updates. Meanwhile, the university is expected to release further guidelines after the May 11 deadline.
