SpiceJet Flight Strands Passengers for Hours Amid Technical Troubles
In a distressing incident, more than 150 passengers aboard SpiceJet's Pune-Delhi evening service were forced to deboard from a Boeing 737 aircraft after being confined inside for over two hours. The flight, which was originally scheduled to depart from Delhi at 4:45 PM and arrive in Pune by 6:55 PM on Wednesday, finally reached its destination at 11:15 PM, marking a delay of over four hours.
Confusion and Discomfort on Board
According to an anonymous flyer, boarding commenced around 4:00 PM after the take-off time was advanced to 4:30 PM. However, once all passengers were on board, the aircraft remained stationary for an extended period. "The aircraft didn't move for a long time after the boarding was completed. In the absence of any information, flyers started to lose patience," the passenger recounted. "Some passengers were told that a technical problem was being looked into. It was hot inside the aircraft but no one cared."
The lack of communication and rising temperatures led to growing frustration among the travelers, many of whom took to social media to voice their grievances. One flyer posted on X, "People want to deboard. All passengers are stuck inside the aircraft for more than two hours and no refreshment has been served. The flight was advanced to 4:30 PM and now it is 6:17 PM. We are still here. The same flight was delayed by three hours on Tuesday too."
Deplaning and Reboarding Delays
Passengers were eventually deboarded around 6:40 PM, but the ordeal was far from over. They had to wait nearly two hours before reboarding the aircraft at approximately 9:10 PM. The flight finally took off around 9:30 PM, causing significant disruptions to passengers' plans. "I had an important function to attend but the delay cost me the same," lamented the anonymous flyer.
Airline's Response and Passenger Discontent
SpiceJet confirmed the incident, attributing the delay to a technical issue. A spokesperson stated, "SpiceJet flight SG 938, operating from Delhi to Pune, was delayed because of a technical issue. Initial troubleshooting was carried out with passengers on board. As it took longer than expected, all passengers were deboarded. The air-conditioning remained operational throughout. Some passengers may have experienced discomfort because of prevailing weather conditions in Delhi. The flight departed once the issue was resolved."
However, passengers disputed the airline's claims regarding the cabin conditions. The flyer added, "The airline might claim anything, but it was hot inside the aircraft. Many flyers repeatedly asked about the issue and requested the cabin crew to let them deboard. For a long time, no information was given about the nature of the problem. There were women, senior citizens and children on the aircraft and all of them suffered. It was a relief when the crew finally announced that we had to deboard."
This incident highlights ongoing challenges in airline operations, particularly concerning passenger comfort and communication during technical disruptions. It serves as a reminder for carriers to prioritize timely updates and customer care to mitigate such stressful experiences.
