Jhunjhunu: Staff from the Sikar electricity department staged a demonstration on Friday and submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police and senior department officials, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved in an attack on an electricity department team. The team had gone to replace a smart meter in the Radhakishanpura area on Thursday.
Employees Warn of Work Boycott
Employees warned that if the accused are not arrested within two days, electricity department staff across the district will boycott work starting Monday. Employee union leaders Rajkumar Bhaskar and Mahesh Kumar stated that technical assistant Omprakash Meel and his team were replacing a faulty smart meter in the area when they were allegedly attacked by local residents. The assailants reportedly assaulted the employees, tore their clothes, and attacked Meel with an iron rod, leaving him seriously injured. He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Demand for Strict Action
The union leaders demanded strict action against those responsible and noted that Friday's protest was symbolic. They warned that if arrests are not made by Monday, electricity employees across the district would launch an indefinite protest and work boycott at the district headquarters.
Concerns Over Outsourced Workers
The employee leaders also raised concerns about the role of outsourced workers engaged by Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (AVVNL). They alleged that permanent department employees often face consequences for actions involving contractual staff. They demanded that contractor employees be issued proper identification cards and be regulated more effectively to maintain public confidence in the corporation and prevent similar incidents in the future.
