In a significant development for South Asian defence cooperation, Pakistan has confirmed it is engaged in high-level talks with Bangladesh regarding a potential defence pact that includes the sale of JF-17 Thunder multi-role combat aircraft.
High-Level Military Talks in Islamabad
The discussions took place between the air force chiefs of the two nations in Islamabad. Pakistan's Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu held extensive talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, on the procurement of the JF-17 fighter, a jet co-developed by Pakistan and China.
According to a statement from Pakistan's military press wing, shared on Tuesday and reported by Bangladesh's Daily Star on Wednesday, the dialogue covered enhanced defence collaboration. Islamabad also assured Dhaka of a fast-track delivery of Super Mushshak trainer aircraft, along with a complete training and long-term logistical support package.
Broader Diplomatic Engagement
This military meeting follows a series of diplomatic exchanges aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. On December 28, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Imran Haider, met with Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, in Dhaka.
During that meeting, both sides explored ways to expand cooperation in trade, investment, and aviation. They also discussed scaling up cultural, educational, and medical exchanges. The High Commissioner indicated that direct flights between Dhaka and Karachi are expected to commence in January.
Furthermore, in October, the Chairman of Pakistan's Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, also paid a courtesy call on Professor Yunus. Their discussions highlighted the growing importance of bilateral trade, investment, and defence cooperation, emphasizing the shared historical and cultural ties between the nations.

The potential defence pact and aircraft sale mark a notable step in Pakistan-Bangladesh relations. The JF-17 Thunder, a cornerstone of the Pakistan Air Force, represents a significant capability upgrade.
