Current Infrastructure Challenges and Redevelopment Efforts
Currently, the only corridor connecting all 11 platforms at Egmore station is the FOB at the Chennai Park end, which serves as the primary entry and exit point from Pantheon Road and Vepery. The existing FOB at the Chetpet end has been partially demolished to accommodate an upcoming rooftop plaza as part of the station's redevelopment. This demolition has limited access to platform 10, leaving just one FOB operational. With platforms 10 and 11 recently reopened for suburban train operations after a 43-day hiatus, railway authorities are prioritizing the construction of the new footover bridge to restore full connectivity.

Railway officials have confirmed that the new FOB will be ready for use by June. It will include lifts and escalators on both sides, designed to help passengers carry luggage without hassle. The suppliers for these facilities have requested additional time to deliver consignments to various stations, including Chennai Beach and other suburban locations undergoing similar redevelopment. Once completed, the new FOB will be integrated with the roof plaza, enhancing the station's infrastructure. Additionally, the existing FOB at the Chetpet end will be temporarily restored with ramps as part of Southern Railway's initiative to maintain accessibility for persons with disabilities.

A Parthiban, a suburban commuter, expressed relief at the news, noting that the new FOB will help alleviate congestion at the existing structures. He emphasized the importance of timely completion, as commuters have been relying on a single FOB for nearly a year. In related developments, railway officials announced that a full and partial cancellation of EMU services during morning and late-night hours will be in effect from Friday until April 7 to facilitate construction work without disrupting operations.
