In a significant push to harness the agricultural potential of the river island, a major training program on scientific beekeeping was held in Majuli's Garmur on Tuesday. The initiative, aimed at promoting mustard honey production, saw enthusiastic participation from more than 100 local farmers and youth.
Unlocking Majuli's Apicultural Potential
The day-long workshop was a collaborative effort, organized by the office of the Divisional Forest Officer in partnership with the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Honey Bees and Pollinators from Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat. The event received sponsorship from the district administration, highlighting its official importance.
The program was formally inaugurated by Majuli Deputy Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak and presided over by Majuli District Forest Officer Mukut Chandra Das. In his address, DC Pathak emphasized the unique opportunity for the region. He pointed out that Majuli's extensive mustard cultivation and favourable climate create exceptional conditions for producing high-quality mustard honey.
Economic and Ecological Benefits Highlighted
"Scientific beekeeping can provide sustainable income opportunities for our farmers and youth and contribute to agricultural productivity through pollination," stated DC Pathak. He explained that the training was specifically designed to equip participants with modern techniques that could transform traditional practices into profitable ventures.
Echoing this sentiment, DFO Mukut Chandra Das elaborated on the dual benefits of promoting apiculture. "Beekeeping is not only about honey production — it plays a crucial role in pollination and maintaining ecological balance," Das said. He stressed that by adopting scientific methods, farmers could achieve a significant increase in their crop yields while actively contributing to environmental conservation.
Comprehensive Curriculum for Modern Beekeepers
The hands-on training covered a wide spectrum of essential topics to ensure a holistic understanding of modern apiculture. AAU scientist M.K. Deka, who helped conduct the session, detailed the curriculum. "We covered topics ranging from bee colony management, disease prevention, honey harvesting techniques, to value addition and marketing strategies," Deka revealed.
This comprehensive approach ensures that participants are not just trained in production but are also equipped with the knowledge to process, brand, and sell their honey effectively, thereby maximizing their income potential from this green enterprise.
The overwhelming response from over 100 attendees underscores the growing interest among Majuli's agrarian community in diversifying their income sources. This initiative marks a strategic step towards sustainable rural development, leveraging the island's natural resources for economic growth and ecological stability.
