Gurgaon's Second Golf Course Road Foot Overbridge Construction to Start Soon
Work on the second foot overbridge along Golf Course Road in Gurgaon is scheduled to begin within the next month, with the pedestrian crossing strategically planned near the La Lagune area. According to a GMDA official, the contracting agency has been formally appointed, and the design phase has been conclusively finalized.
Shift from Original Plan to La Lagune Location
The La Lagune location represents a significant deviation from the initial proposal, which had earmarked the Times Centre vicinity for the structure. This adjustment highlights the evolving priorities in addressing local safety concerns.
The project, anticipated to require at least one year for completion, is being spearheaded by the DLF Foundation under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. This underscores a collaborative approach between private enterprise and public welfare in urban development.
Addressing a Critical Safety Hazard
The stretch near La Lagune has been identified as one of the city's notorious black spots, frequently witnessing accidents primarily attributed to excessive speeding. This danger is exacerbated by inadequate signage and insufficient speed control measures, creating a perilous environment for pedestrians.
This corridor experiences heavy vehicular traffic throughout the day, with a constant flow of office commuters, local residents, and support staff who often must navigate multiple lanes of fast-moving vehicles due to the absence of safe crossing points.
Longstanding Community Demand for Safer Infrastructure
Residents of the societies lining this corridor have persistently advocated for improved pedestrian infrastructure. They argue that the lack of designated crossings forces individuals to risk their lives amidst speeding traffic.
"Crossing this road during peak hours is an extremely hazardous endeavor. Some sections of our colony are situated on the opposite side, compelling residents to resort to using cars even for short distances merely to cross safely. A foot overbridge will provide much-needed relief and security," explained Kalyan Singh Sandhu, RWA president of Saraswati Enclave.
Previous Controversy and Removal of Safety Measure
In October 2024, this site became a point of contention between the metropolitan authority and the developer following the construction of a table-top crossing. This structure, recommended by the district road safety committee to decelerate traffic for safer pedestrian passage, was dismantled shortly after its installation.
The developer objected, contending that such a measure might inadvertently encourage jaywalking on this heavily trafficked thoroughfare, highlighting the complex balance between traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
Success of the First Foot Overbridge at Chakkarpur
The inaugural foot overbridge on this corridor was constructed at Chakkarpur and became operational in November 2024. Officials reported that this structure significantly enhanced pedestrian movement in that stretch by offering a secure crossing alternative.
According to data from the DLF Foundation, the facility recorded an impressive over 3.46 lakh public footfalls in the fiscal year 2024-25, demonstrating its substantial utility and acceptance among the community.
Design and Features of the Upcoming Structure
The forthcoming foot overbridge near La Lagune is expected to adhere to similar high design standards, incorporating essential features such as:
- Lifts and stair access to ensure convenience and accessibility for all users, including the elderly and differently-abled.
- Comprehensive illumination at the pedestrian crossing to bolster safety during nighttime hours.
Broader Infrastructure Vision and Adjustments
Originally proposed in 2020, the metropolitan authority had envisioned five overbridges along Golf Course Road. However, resistance from residents of Vipul Belmonte, who opposed one of the proposed structures near their apartment complex, led to a revision of plans.
Subsequently, the GMDA granted in-principle approval for four structures at the following key locations:
- Bristol Chowk
- Times Centre
- MPD Tower
- Paras Downtown
This project marks a critical step in Gurgaon's ongoing efforts to mitigate traffic-related risks and foster a safer, more pedestrian-friendly urban environment, addressing both immediate hazards and long-term infrastructure goals.
