Kalaburagi Jolada Rotti Expands Global Reach with Exports to US, UK, and Australia
The iconic and nutritious Kalaburagi Jolada Rotti, renowned for its rich taste and health benefits, is poised to make a significant international debut this week. Exports are scheduled to commence to the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, marking a pivotal moment for the local economy in Kalaburagi district. This initiative is anticipated to foster entrepreneurship and catalyze transformative changes, particularly for women involved in self-help groups across the region.
Agricultural Department Drives Export Initiative
Samad Patel, the joint director of agriculture in Kalaburagi, provided detailed insights into this ambitious project. "We initially sent a sample batch of 100 rottis to Europe and Australia, which received approval. Now, we are preparing to dispatch 10,000 rotis each to the US, UK, and Australia, with expectations that demand will surge in these markets," he explained. Patel emphasized that over 1,000 individuals in Kalaburagi are currently engaged in rotti preparation using machinery supplied by the agriculture department. To ensure a structured market presence, the online marketing platform for international sales is being significantly expanded.
Strategic Partnerships and Branding Efforts
According to Patel, Astham Exports and Imports Company, a Pune-based firm with an export license covering 25 countries and founded by natives of Kalaburagi, has expressed keen interest in promoting Kalaburagi rottis on a global scale. "We have instructed them to market the products under the Kalaburagi rotti brand with premium packaging. Initially, we may realize only Rs 15 per rotti, inclusive of manufacturing, packing, and transportation costs. However, once consumers develop a preference, they are likely to pay higher prices," Patel added. This strategic branding aims to enhance product value and recognition abroad.
Infrastructure Development and Capacity Building
A major development is underway with the establishment of a manufacturing, packing, and branding unit at the District Agriculture Training Centre. This project, funded by a Rs 55 lakh CSR contribution from HDFC Bank, includes constructing a production facility at a cost of Rs 32.5 lakh. "Upon completion, we will be able to ramp up production capacity to 10,000 rottis per day," Patel stated. Additionally, 1,000 farmers are undergoing training to improve production and packaging techniques, with 90% of these trainees being women, highlighting a strong focus on gender empowerment.
Government Support and Market Expansion
Kalaburagi district minister Priyank Kharge outlined the state government's proactive measures to create an organized market for Kalaburagi rotti. These steps include implementing an online marketing and promotional system, raising awareness about the product's unique features, and expanding its export potential. This comprehensive approach aims to secure a sustainable future for the local delicacy in international trade.
Health Benefits of Jolada Rotti
Jolada Rotti is celebrated not only for its taste but also for its nutritional advantages, making it an appealing choice for health-conscious consumers globally:
- Rich in fibre: Promotes digestive health.

- Free from gluten: Ideal for individuals with gluten intolerance.

This export venture represents a significant milestone for Kalaburagi, blending culinary tradition with economic growth and social empowerment.
