Goan Seamen Association Provides Critical Support to Mariners Amid Middle East Tensions

The Goan Seamen Association of India is actively offering support and guidance to seafarers who are expressing deep concerns about the current volatile situation in the Middle East. Frank Viegas, the president of the association, confirmed that several seafarers have reached out, fearing potential attacks on their vessels due to escalating regional conflicts.

Addressing Fears and Providing Reassurance

"Some seafarers contacted us and said they are worried their vessel could be attacked. They fear the war may escalate. We told them to stay calm and follow advisories from their companies and from DG shipping," Viegas stated. The association is emphasizing the importance of adhering to official guidelines to ensure safety during these uncertain times.

Operational Impacts and Contract Extensions

Viegas highlighted that the conflict has led to significant operational disruptions. "Some companies kept the joining and relieving of their seafarers on hold. Those who are on ship and already finished their contract may have to extend it for a month, depending on the situation," he explained. This hold affects crew changes and could result in extended contracts for many mariners currently at sea.

Security Measures and Precautions

Many seafarers are currently anchored around Jebel Ali and in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, while others continue sailing through high-risk areas. The association has issued strict security advisories:

  • Seafarers are instructed not to post pictures of ships, drones, or missiles on social media platforms.
  • If they observe any missiles or drones, they must avoid taking photographs and refrain from being out on the deck unnecessarily.
  • During nighttime operations, vessels are implementing blackout conditions, with only minimum essential lights switched on to reduce visibility and avoid potential attacks.

Viegas elaborated, "At night, it is mostly a blackout, as they were instructed to switch on only the minimum lights while sailing to avoid any attack."

Official Support from DG Shipping

In response to the crisis, the Directorate General of Shipping has released dedicated helpline numbers and email addresses to assist seafarers in distress. This initiative aims to provide immediate support and resources for those facing challenges during the ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The Goan Seamen Association continues to monitor the situation closely, urging all mariners to maintain communication with their employers and follow all safety protocols to navigate these perilous waters safely.
