Thiruvananthapuram Infrastructure Projects Accelerate After Delays
Two major infrastructure projects in Thiruvananthapuram have finally gained significant momentum this week. After months of administrative delays, the Kerala Road Fund Board issued a crucial tender for the Vattiyoorkavu road and junction development project on Monday.
Tenders Issued for Key Road Upgrades
The Kerala Road Fund Board floated the construction tender for the comprehensive Vattiyoorkavu road upgrade scheme. This follows last week's separate tender for rehabilitating affected traders, which cleared a major procedural hurdle. Meanwhile, the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala called for bids on the same day for the long-awaited Peroorkada flyover project.
Both projects aim to address chronic traffic bottlenecks in the city's busy eastern corridor. Vattiyoorkavu MLA V K Prasanth confirmed that both landmark initiatives are now on an accelerated timeline.
Construction Timeline and Project Details
According to Prasanth, foundation stones for both projects will be laid by mid-February. Actual construction work should begin in March following formal ceremonies and final preparatory clearances. The MLA emphasized that these projects represent more than just roadworks.
"These projects are not just roadworks; they are lifelines for our daily commuters and local businesses," Prasanth told TOI. "With the tenders out and land issues largely resolved, we are now on track to begin work that will transform traffic flow and connectivity across the eastern suburbs."
Vattiyoorkavu Road Development Scope
The Vattiyoorkavu project had faced delays due to administrative and technical clearances. The comprehensive upgrade will transform a key arterial corridor connecting multiple areas:
- Sasthamangalam to Mannarakonam via Vattiyoorkavu
- Extension through Mannarakonam to Peroorkada
- Further connection to Vazhayila
This extensive project covers nearly 10.75 kilometers of roadway. The development includes several important improvements:
- Four-lane expansion of existing roads
- Enhanced medians for better traffic management
- New footpaths for pedestrian safety
- Improved street lighting systems
- Various commuter amenities
Earlier project phases involved extensive demolition and land acquisition activities. These have now reached advanced stages, enabling the Kerala Road Fund Board to proceed with the tendering process. Authorities have acquired land to construct a shopping complex that will rehabilitate over 570 affected traders.
Peroorkada Flyover Specifications
The Peroorkada flyover represents another critical infrastructure intervention for the city. This 874-meter, two-lane elevated structure will tackle one of Thiruvananthapuram's most congested junctions where four major roads intersect.
The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board is funding this project, while the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala will execute the construction. Officials expect to award the construction tender soon, followed by contractor mobilization.
Work could potentially start by March once all necessary clearances are in place. Project completion is currently expected by mid-2027, providing much-needed relief to commuters facing daily traffic challenges at this busy intersection.
Both projects mark significant progress in Thiruvananthapuram's infrastructure development, addressing long-standing transportation issues that have affected residents and businesses in the eastern suburbs for years.
