Coimbatore's Noyyal Riverfront Development Project Secures ₹202.5 Crore Administrative Sanction

The Coimbatore Municipal Corporation has achieved a significant milestone with the state government granting administrative sanction of ₹202.5 crore for the ambitious Noyyal riverfront development project. This substantial financial approval marks a crucial step forward in transforming the city's waterway infrastructure and recreational landscape.

Tender Process Initiated for Swift Implementation

Immediately following the administrative sanction, the city corporation invited tenders for the project on Wednesday, demonstrating urgency in moving forward with the development works. Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran confirmed that the tendering process is now underway, with submissions expected to close by the first week of March.

The commissioner elaborated, "We wasted no time in initiating the tender process once the administrative sanction was officially received from the state government. The sanctioned amount of ₹202.5 crore includes a maintenance cost component of ₹24.26 crore specifically allocated for the first five years of operation. Construction activities will commence promptly after the tendering process concludes and contractors are finalized."

Comprehensive Development Plan for 4.3-Kilometer Stretch

The riverfront development project aims to comprehensively transform a 4.3-kilometer stretch of the Noyyal river, extending from Nanjundapuram to Athupalam. This ambitious initiative encompasses multiple components designed to enhance both infrastructure and public amenities along the waterway.

Key development works include:

  • Strengthening and improving the river bunds on both sides
  • Providing proper road access along the reinforced bunds
  • Constructing seven-meter-wide approach roads on one side of the bund
  • Developing recreational activity spaces on the opposite side

Beautification and Environmental Components

As part of the beautification efforts, the project plans to establish five parks, install open-air gym facilities, and create designated riverfront viewpoints along the entire stretch. These amenities are expected to significantly enhance public access and enjoyment of the riverfront area.

The detailed project report outlines that approximately ₹102 crore has been specifically allocated for the riverfront development works. Additionally, the plan incorporates three sewage treatment plants (STPs) as crucial environmental infrastructure components.

Eco-Friendly Design Aligned with Global Standards

What makes this project particularly noteworthy is its commitment to environmental sustainability. The entire development has been designed following an eco-friendly pattern, with materials and construction methods carefully selected to align with global sustainability development goals.

This approach ensures that the riverfront transformation not only enhances urban infrastructure but also contributes positively to environmental conservation efforts, setting a benchmark for similar projects across the region.
