Patna-Bettiah Expressway: 15% Work Done, Land Deal Final

Patna-Bettiah Expressway Construction Progresses with 15% Completion on Initial Phases

In a significant development for Bihar's infrastructure, approximately 15% of the construction work on the first two packages of the Patna-Bettiah four-lane expressway project has been successfully completed. The ongoing efforts are advancing rapidly on the remaining sections, marking a steady pace towards enhancing regional connectivity.

Project Overview and Current Status

Initiated in August 2024, this ambitious expressway spans a total length of 163.68 kilometers. It commences from Bakarpur in Vaishali district and will link to Patna via the JP Setu over the Ganga river in Digha. According to officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the current distance from Patna to Bettiah, which stands at around 204 kilometers, is set to be substantially reduced upon project completion.

Key milestones include the completion of the bid process for the remaining package, with land acquisition work now in its final stages. This progress underscores the commitment to timely execution and efficient resource management.

Phased Construction and Strategic Enhancements

Raju Kumar, Project Director of NHAI's Chhapra division, provided detailed insights into the project's structure. The four-lane expressway is being constructed on the Bakarpur-Manikpur-Sahebganj-Areraj-Bettiah section of NH-139 (W). It features a greenfield corridor covering approximately 145 kilometers and is divided into three primary phases:

  • First Phase: A 38.81-kilometer stretch from Bakarpur to Manikpur in Muzaffarpur.
  • Second Phase: A 44.65-kilometer segment from Manikpur to Sahebganj in Muzaffarpur.
  • Third Phase: Construction from Sahebganj to Bettiah.

Additionally, a fourth package has been introduced, with the administration expediting preparations in West Champaran district. The government has approved Rs 9.35 crore for land acquisition across 13 villages, including Nishi Karahiya, Mathouli, and Hatsaraiya. Compensation for structures and trees will be determined separately, based on land type, area, and market value, ensuring fair and transparent processes.

Infrastructure Features and Expected Benefits

The expressway project is not just about road expansion; it incorporates advanced infrastructure elements to facilitate smooth traffic flow. Key components include the construction of three major bridges over the Gandak river and its tributaries in Saran district, along with 10 flyovers, grade separators, and 108 underpasses.

Upon completion, the new four-lane expressway is projected to revolutionize travel in the region. Commuters can expect the travel time from Digha to Bettiah to be slashed from the current six hours to just two and a half hours. This improvement will enable city residents to travel faster from Patna to Bettiah, boosting daily commutes and economic activities.

Economic and Social Impact

The NHAI official emphasized that the project is poised to deliver substantial economic benefits, enhance road safety, and significantly reduce travel times for commuters. It will play a crucial role in facilitating efficient commuting from Patna to Bettiah, thereby strengthening intra-state connectivity.

Moreover, the expressway is expected to boost tourism in Bihar and provide improved connectivity to Nepal, fostering cross-border trade and cultural exchanges. With an estimated completion date set for 2027 and a project cost of approximately Rs 5,996 crore, this initiative represents a major investment in the state's future infrastructure landscape.

As construction continues at a brisk pace, stakeholders remain optimistic about the transformative potential of the Patna-Bettiah expressway, anticipating it to serve as a catalyst for regional development and prosperity.
