Maha Metro Proposes Major Upgrades for Pune's Elevated Chakan Corridor
In a significant development for Pune's urban infrastructure, Maha Metro has formally submitted a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the elevated Metro line stretching from Bhakti Shakti Chowk to Chakan. This updated proposal has been presented to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for thorough review and further consideration, marking a crucial step forward in the project's planning phase.
Enhanced Route and Increased Stations
The revised DPR outlines a total route distance of 47.2 kilometers, which represents a substantial extension of 5 kilometers compared to the earlier planned length of 42.2 kilometers. This expansion is accompanied by the inclusion of three new stations, elevating the total number of stations along the corridor to 34, up from the initial count of 31. These additions are strategically designed to improve connectivity and cater to a broader commuter base.
Rising Project Costs and Alignment Adjustments
With the incorporation of these additional stations and route modifications, the overall project cost has seen a notable increase. The revised estimate now stands at Rs 12,937 crore, a significant rise from the earlier projection of Rs 10,383 crore. Key alignment changes have been proposed in critical areas such as Bhosari MIDC, Landewadi, and Bhosarigaon. These adjustments aim to enhance accessibility and optimize the Metro's reach for more residents and workers in these densely populated zones.
Integrated Infrastructure and Future Expansions
A standout feature of the revised plan is the proposal for an integrated double-decker flyover spanning 17 kilometers from Bhosari to Chakan. This infrastructure component will be developed in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), promising to streamline traffic flow and support multimodal transport. Additionally, the DPR recommends the demolition and reconstruction of the existing flyover at Bhosari to align with the new Metro alignment, as confirmed by Maha Metro officials.
Looking ahead, the revised DPR includes provisions for future Metro expansions at both the Bhakti Shakti and Chakan terminals. Officials have highlighted potential extensions, such as a line from Bhakti Shakti Chowk towards Talawade MIDC–Kharabwadi–Chakan, and connectivity to the proposed Wakad–Katraj line at Bhujbal Chowk through track linkages. These forward-thinking elements underscore the project's role in Pune's long-term urban mobility strategy.
Current Progress and Next Steps
It is important to note that work on another critical Metro segment—from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti Chowk, covering areas like Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi—is already underway, demonstrating Maha Metro's ongoing commitment to expanding Pune's Metro network. The PCMC is expected to deliberate on the revised DPR and provide its suggestions. Following approval from the municipal corporation, the proposal will be forwarded to the state government for final clearance, paving the way for implementation.
