KSRTC Implements Fare Hike on Mangaluru-Kasaragod Route Following NHAI's New Toll Gate

In a significant development affecting commuters between Karnataka and Kerala, the KSRTC Mangaluru division has announced a fare increase for buses operating on the Mangaluru–Kasaragod route. This decision comes just days after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) commenced toll collection at Arikkady near Kumbala in Kasaragod district.

Details of the Fare Revision

The fare hike applies to both ordinary and Rajahamsa services, with increases of Rs 7 and Rs 10, respectively. As a result, the bus charge from Mangaluru to Kasaragod has risen from Rs 81 to Rs 88. KSRTC officials have cited the need to offset a daily loss of approximately Rs 50,000 due to the introduction of the second tollbooth on the 50-kilometer stretch between the two cities.

It is important to note that the road transport corporation of Kerala has not yet made a decision regarding a similar fare hike, leaving the situation in flux for passengers.

Background on the Toll Gate Issue

Previously, vehicles on the Mangaluru–Kasaragod route paid toll only at Talapady. The toll charges were as follows:

  • Light motor vehicles (LMVs): Rs 80 for same-day return
  • Buses and trucks: Rs 250 for same-day return

With the new tollgate at Arikkady, additional charges have been imposed:

  • LMVs: Rs 130 for same-day return
  • Buses: Rs 450 for same-day return

This has effectively doubled the toll burden for many commuters, leading to widespread discontent.

Ongoing Protests Against the Toll Gate

Meanwhile, protests against the second toll gate on NH-66 between Mangaluru and Kasaragod have continued in the neighbouring district. A march was held on Monday, organized by various women's organisations and led by the Action Committee Against Toll Gate. The dissent resonates strongly against what many perceive as an unjust toll at the Arikkady booth in Kumbala.

Action Committee chairman and MLA of Manjeshwar, AKM Ashraf, emphasized that the protest is intensifying against the unfair toll imposition within a 22-kilometer span at Talapady and Arikkady. He stated that the action committee would persist with its agitation until the toll plaza is closed, highlighting the community's resolve to challenge the NHAI's decision.

Implications for Commuters and Transport Services

The fare hike by KSRTC is a direct response to the financial strain caused by the new toll gate, which has increased operational costs for bus services. This move underscores the broader impact of infrastructure projects on public transportation and everyday travel. As the situation evolves, commuters are left grappling with higher costs, while authorities balance economic considerations with public welfare.

The ongoing protests and fare adjustments reflect a growing tension between development initiatives and their socio-economic consequences, making this a critical issue for residents and travelers in the region.
