Gurgaon SPR Traffic Crisis Spurs Major Road Expansion and Missing Link Revival

In response to escalating traffic congestion along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated a comprehensive plan to construct new service roads and revive a critical missing link. This strategic move aims to alleviate pressure on the arterial corridor and enhance internal connectivity across key sectors.

3.5 km Service Roads Planned to Ease SPR Congestion

GMDA is preparing to develop approximately 3.5 kilometers of service roads across sectors 70-70A and 70-75. These stretches are designed to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce the burden on SPR, which currently handles heavy daily traffic. Officials have confirmed that a detailed project report is under preparation, with tenders to be floated upon approval.

New Corridor to Feature Service Lanes and Cycle Tracks

The upcoming road between sectors 68 and 69 will be equipped with dual carriageways, service lanes, green belts, cycle tracks, and footpaths. Additionally, a previously constructed 1.1 km stretch will undergo repairs as part of the project to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhanced safety for commuters.

SPR Redevelopment Pushes Need for Parallel Road Network

With SPR slated for major redevelopment, GMDA officials emphasize the necessity of strengthening parallel routes and internal sector roads. These measures are expected to manage traffic diversions during construction phases and mitigate congestion on the main stretch, ensuring minimal disruption to daily commutes.

Missing Link Road Between Sectors 68 and 69 Revived

GMDA has floated a tender to complete a long-pending 900-meter missing link between sectors 68 and 69. This stretch will connect Sohna Road with sectors 68, 69, 70, 70A, and 75, serving as an alternative route to SPR. The revival of this link is crucial for distributing traffic more evenly across the network.

Rs 25.3 Crore Road Project to Improve Sector Connectivity

The missing link project is now estimated at Rs 25.3 crore, following delays due to land acquisition issues that have since been resolved. Work initially began in 2019 but remained incomplete, with only 1.1 km finished by 2022. The remaining stretch is anticipated to be completed within a year, marking a significant step forward in infrastructure development.

SPR Alternative Corridor to Span 5 km Once Complete

Upon completion of the missing link, the entire 5 km corridor will function as a vital alternative to SPR for commuters heading towards Sohna Road. This expansion will also enhance connectivity between sectors 58 and 75, facilitating more efficient traffic distribution and reducing bottlenecks in the region.
