Patrick Mahomes signs historic $504M extension with Kansas City Chiefs
Mahomes inks $504M extension with Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised quarterback Patrick Mahomes for his on-field excellence and off-field roles as a father and husband. "Listen, he's done a great job as a professional and then off the field as a father and husband, and so you got the whole package there," Reid said. "You guys have had a chance to watch him grow over the years in both those areas, and so he's a great representative of the organization and a heck of a football player."

Historic contract for Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes, who led the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl victory after 50 years and added two more titles, has signed an 8-year, $504 million contract extension in June 2026. This makes him the first NFL player with a total contract value exceeding half a billion dollars. According to Spotrac, the deal includes an average annual salary of $63 million. In 2026, the 30-year-old quarterback will earn a base salary of $1.3 million, a $54 million restructure bonus, and a $1 million workout bonus, with a cap hit of $34 million. The extension keeps him with the Chiefs through the 2033 season, when he will be 38 years old, the same age as Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams.

Mother's heartfelt message

Randi Mahomes, Patrick's mother, shared several photos of her son on Instagram and wrote: "These years in the NFL have flown by, but watching you step into your purpose and chase your dreams has never stopped feeling special. Looking back through these photos just reminds me how far you've come and how much heart you've put into every single season. I am so proud of the man you are, on and off the field. Here's to your 10th year! To years of dedication, resilience, doing what you love, and to many more chapters ahead! I love you!"

Lamar Jackson's potential extension

Following Mahomes' massive deal, ESPN's Bill Barnwell predicts a similar move for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. Barnwell suggests a four-year, $260 million contract averaging $65 million per year, which would make Jackson the highest-paid player in NFL history. The Ravens may need to guarantee Jackson's $52 million owed in 2027 and over $100 million of new money, with practical guarantees extending into 2030 or 2031. Barnwell noted that Jackson could argue for a fully guaranteed contract based on his previous negotiations. Jackson's average annual value of $65 million would surpass Mahomes' $63 million, though Mahomes has three Super Bowl rings while Jackson has none.
