In a significant push to enhance urban mobility and commercial development, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and its subsidiary have awarded major contracts for integrated transit hubs. The projects, cumulatively valued at ₹435.88 crore, are set to transform key stations into vibrant commercial and connectivity nodes.
Major Contracts for Sholinganallur and Thoraipakkam
Chennai Metro Rail Limited has inked a substantial agreement worth ₹268.8 crore with Bridge and Roof Co. (India) Ltd. This contract encompasses comprehensive civil and architectural works. The focus is on developing metro entry and exit structures that will seamlessly incorporate dedicated commercial spaces at both Sholinganallur and Thoraipakkam stations. This move goes beyond basic transit, aiming to create built environments that serve daily commuter needs while generating ancillary revenue.
Mandaveli Depot to Get Multi-Modal Hub
In a parallel development, the Chennai Metro Asset Management Ltd. (CMAML) has signed a separate contract valued at ₹167.08 crore. This project is centered on the property development of the Mandaveli bus depot, which is adjacent to the upcoming Mandaveli underground metro station. The vision is to create a fully integrated multi-modal transit point. The plan includes constructing designated pick-up and drop bays, streamlined metro access points, and allocating space for commercial ventures and offices. This integration is designed to offer seamless transfers between different modes of transport.
Boosting Revenue and Commuter Experience
Officials from the metro rail authority highlight that these developments serve a dual purpose. Primarily, they aim to significantly improve commuter convenience by offering amenities and smoother inter-modal connectivity. Secondly, and crucially for the metro's financial sustainability, these commercial-cum-transit infrastructures are expected to provide a substantial boost to non-ticket revenue streams for CMRL. By monetizing prime real estate around its stations, the metro system can diversify its income, which can be reinvested into operations and future expansions.
The awarded contracts mark a strategic step in Chennai's urban infrastructure journey, moving from standalone metro stations towards comprehensive urban hubs that blend transit, commerce, and community space.
