Bengaluru's Double-Decker Flyover Approaches Full Operational Status
Bengaluru's pioneering double-decker flyover, stretching between Central Silk Board and Ragigudda, is poised to become fully operational by March 2026. This development represents a significant milestone in the city's protracted efforts to alleviate traffic congestion at one of its most notorious junctions.
Final Stretch Completion Targeted for February
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has outlined plans to finalize the remaining section from HSR Layout to BTM Layout by February. Upon completion, this elevated roadway will be opened to the public following necessary coordination with traffic police authorities.
Construction Progress and Current Status
All steel girders across the Silk Board flyover have been successfully launched. Presently, construction teams are engaged in deck slab casting, finishing work, and allied activities to prepare the stretch for vehicular traffic.
Partial Opening and Historical Delays
In July 2024, BMRCL inaugurated the Ragigudda-to-Silk Board segment of the double-decker flyover, spanning approximately 5 kilometers. However, the opposite carriageway remained closed due to construction and clearance delays. The Silk Board-to-Ragigudda stretch, originally scheduled for December 2025 opening, experienced setbacks from design modifications, traffic police approvals, and complex girder-launching operations.
Anticipated Benefits for Commuters
Once fully operational, the new stretch will provide substantial relief to motorists traveling from HSR Layout towards BTM Layout via the down ramp, as well as those heading from HSR Layout to Ragigudda on the elevated road.
From Construction Delays to Community Use
Construction on this project commenced in 2019, but prolonged delays kept the road inaccessible for years. During this extended period, local residents famously utilized the incomplete elevated stretch for jogging and morning walks, creating an unexpected community space.
Traffic Flow Clarifications
Officials have clarified that not all traffic will bypass the junction. Vehicles moving from Hosur Road towards HSR Layout and those heading from HSR Layout to Madiwala will still need to navigate through the Silk Board junction.
Integration with Metro Infrastructure
The double-decker flyover constitutes an integral component of the Yellow Line Metro project. To facilitate construction and establish an interchange Metro station at the junction, the Jayadeva flyover was demolished.
Expected Impact on Silk Board Congestion
Traffic police authorities report that congestion beneath the Silk Board flyover has already diminished following the partial opening. Full commissioning is anticipated to further streamline traffic flow, although signals at the junction will remain operational.
