The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has taken a significant stride forward in expanding the Lucknow Metro network into the historic Old City area. The corporation has declared AYESA as the lowest bidder for the crucial Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract pertaining to Line 2 under Phase 1B of the ambitious project.
Project Overview and Significance
This development marks a pivotal step in the execution of the Lucknow Metro Phase 2, specifically the Charbagh to Vasant Kunj corridor. The project, which received central government approval in August of the previous year with an estimated cost of Rs 5,801 crore, is designed to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility.
Corridor Details and Connectivity
The East-West corridor, spanning 11.165 kilometers, will feature a total of 12 stations. This includes a 4.286-kilometer elevated section with five stations and a 6.879-kilometer underground section with seven stations. Once operational, this new line will extend Lucknow's active Metro network to an impressive 34 kilometers.
The corridor is strategically planned to connect vital areas:
- Key Commercial Hubs: Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk.
- Major Healthcare Institutions: Improved access to facilities like King George Medical University.
- Historical and Tourist Sites: Seamless connectivity to landmarks such as the Bada and Chhota Imambaras, Rumi Darwaza, Clock Tower, and Moosa Bagh.
- Cultural and Culinary Centers: Better linkage to Old City areas renowned for their rich heritage and vibrant food culture.
Bidding Process and Contract Award
The UPMRC initiated the procurement process by inviting bids for the DDC contract in August 2025. The contract entails a substantial duration of 60 months, or five years. The scope of work for the appointed consultant is comprehensive, covering the design of both the elevated and underground sections.
Technical and Financial Evaluation
Technical bids were opened in October, revealing two qualified contenders: AYESA and the joint venture SYSTRA-Ardanuy. The subsequent opening of financial bids on January 21 proved decisive, with AYESA emerging as the lowest bidder by quoting Rs 15.90 crore for the consultancy services.
The DDC's responsibilities are multifaceted, encompassing civil, architectural, electrical & mechanical (E&M), and traction works. Specifically, the design mandate includes:
- The 4.29-km elevated section (including ramps) with its five stations.
- The 6.88-km underground section with seven stations.
- The depot facility planned at Vasant Kunj.
