In the bustling heart of Chandrapur, at Girnar Chowk, where evening crowds converge and e-rickshaws weave through dense traffic, 23-year-old Nupur Tapali has become a local icon. Known affectionately as Nupur Didi, she stands out in a trade traditionally dominated by men, driving an e-rickshaw during the day and managing a paan kiosk at night. Her story is one of resilience, passion, and breaking barriers in a small Indian city.

A Dual Life of Hard Work and Determination

Nupur, a BBA graduate, made a bold decision to leave a store manager's job to pursue what she describes as a tougher yet more meaningful path. Her daily routine kicks off with 'Nilpari', her e-rickshaw, which she uses to ferry schoolchildren and deliver parcels across Chandrapur. By 7 PM, she transitions to her paan stall at the chowk, serving a steady stream of customers until 11 PM. On an average night, she sells up to 250 paans, including sweet, masala, chocolate, and customised varieties, priced between Rs 20 and Rs 50, showcasing her entrepreneurial acumen.

Family Responsibilities and Personal Ambitions

The fifth of six daughters, Nupur's life took a turn after her father, Ashok Tapali, an auto-rickshaw driver and grocery shop owner, passed away in 2013. With three sisters married, the eldest returning widowed with two children, Nupur stepped up to stabilise the household. She shouldered the costs of her nephews' education, supported her youngest sister Rupali through polytechnic, and kept her own dreams alive. Having cleared the CET, she aspires to pursue an MBA, balancing immediate responsibilities with long-term goals.

From Paanipuri to Paan: A Journey of Learning

Nupur's entrepreneurial journey began with a paanipuri shop near Ramala Lake, funded by a Rs 30,000 loan from a friend. When the venture incurred losses, she pivoted to paan, a product she enjoyed and understood better. This shift not only revived her business but also allowed her to connect with her passion, demonstrating adaptability in the face of challenges.

Challenging Gender Stereotypes with Confidence

Operating in a male-dominated trade, Nupur faces unwarranted attention but confronts it head-on. "Why should men look at women differently and repeatedly? Women are equal. We can do any business. If women can fly fighter jets, why can't we sell paan? There's no 'men's job'— only jobs," she asserts. A poignant moment for her was when a woman customer, inspired by seeing a female vendor, bought paan for the first time to gift to her husband, feeling empowered by the experience.

Inspiration from Home and Online Presence

At home, Nupur draws strength from her mother, who continues to run the family grocery shop and has navigated years of upheaval with fortitude. Nupur calls her a fighter, highlighting the role of familial support in her journey. Online, she has cultivated a following on Instagram (@nupurdidi_official), sharing upbeat videos of her daily grind, awkward encounters, and messages promoting independence. Standing barely five feet tall, she is a formidable presence, setting boundaries and rejecting partnerships that could limit her autonomy. "Why compromise? Women should make their own decisions. I will not make anyone a partner from whom I would have to seek permissions," she declares.

As International Women's Day approaches, Chandrapur celebrates Nupur not as a novelty but as a symbol of persistence. Her story resonates as that of a young entrepreneur keeping her family afloat, funding education, and building a future through sheer hard work, one shift at a time. Her journey underscores the power of determination in overcoming societal norms and economic hurdles.
