ICAR-DCR Puttur Marks World Soil Day 2024 with Focus on Urban Soil Health
World Soil Day Celebrated at ICAR-DCR Puttur

The ICAR–Directorate of Cashew Research (ICAR–DCR) in Puttur marked World Soil Day with a vibrant and informative event on Friday. This year's global theme, 'Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities,' took center stage, highlighting the foundational role of soil in creating sustainable and resilient urban spaces.

Expert Insights and Knowledge Dissemination

The celebration commenced with a symbolic watering of a cashew plant by dignitaries, reinforcing the institution's dedication to sustainable agriculture. A special lecture on 'Importance and Management of Soils for Successful Horticultural Enterprises' was delivered by CA Shrinivasa Murthy, former professor and head of soil science at UAS GKVK, Bengaluru. Murthy outlined practical scientific approaches for boosting soil fertility and horticultural productivity. He emphasized several critical areas:

  • Managing soil organic matter and composting effectively.
  • Applying fertilizers based on specific needs.
  • Implementing integrated nutrient management strategies.
  • Preserving and enhancing soil biodiversity.

To empower farmers with the latest know-how, a set of extension publications was released during the event.

Empowering Farmers with Tools and Training

A significant part of the day involved direct engagement with the farming community. Soil health cards were distributed to farmers from Sullia and Puttur taluks, providing them with crucial data on their field's nutrient status for better crop planning. Furthermore, a hands-on demonstration on correct soil and plant sampling techniques and testing procedures was conducted for farmers and Self-Help Group members from Sampaje village, Sullia taluk. This session aimed to ensure the accuracy of future soil test results.

Addressing On-Ground Challenges

An interactive session allowed farmers to pose their field-level challenges directly to ICAR–DCR scientists. Experts addressed doubts and shared best management practices for improving soil fertility, particularly for cashew and other horticultural crops. In his presidential address, J Dinakara Adiga, Director of ICAR–DCR, Puttur, stressed the imperative of protecting soil resources to ensure higher yields and long-term sustainability. He advocated for practical methods like composting, mulching, and promoting beneficial microflora.

The event successfully combined awareness, education, and action. A video clip on World Soil Day was shown to underscore global conservation efforts. The programme saw active participation from 85 attendees, including farmers, SHG members, women participants, and ICAR–DCR staff, collectively advancing the mission for healthier soils.
