A devastating fire in the early hours of Thursday gutted an incense sticks manufacturing unit in Salem, Tamil Nadu, resulting in the destruction of goods and raw materials estimated at a staggering Rs 50 lakh. The incident has cast a shadow over the livelihoods of around 40 workers employed at the facility.
Blaze Erupts in Early Morning Hours
The fire broke out in the unit located near the Seelanaickenpatti bypass in Salem city. The premises, owned by 52-year-old M Nazir of Seelanaickenpatti, was fortunately unoccupied at the time, preventing any loss of life or injuries. Alert residents who spotted the flames quickly notified the Fire and Rescue Services Department, prompting an immediate response.
Three-Hour Battle to Control Inferno
Firefighters faced a challenging task as they worked tirelessly for approximately three hours to douse the flames and bring the situation under control. Their efforts prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent properties, averting a potentially larger disaster. Following the incident, officials from the Kitchipalayam police station registered a formal case to investigate the cause.
Electrical Short Circuit Identified as Cause
Preliminary investigations conducted by the authorities have pinpointed the origin of the fire. It is believed to have been triggered by an electric short circuit in a machine used for heating and drying incense sticks. This malfunction led to the rapid spread of the fire, which consumed flammable raw materials and finished products within the unit.
The incident highlights the critical need for stringent electrical safety audits and fire prevention protocols in small and medium-scale manufacturing units, which form the backbone of local economies in many Indian districts.
