BENGALURU: Ravi K has assumed charge as chairman and managing director (CMD) of defence public sector undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), becoming the company’s 22nd CMD. He succeeds DK Sunil, who superannuated on April 30.
Prior to this appointment, Ravi K served as director (operations) at HAL, where he was involved in strategic planning. With over 30 years of experience in aerospace, defence, manufacturing, and electronics, he brings a wealth of expertise to the role.
Key Achievements and Roles
During his earlier tenure as executive director and general manager of the LCA Tejas division, Ravi K was associated with several major contracts. These include the supply of 180 LCA Tejas aircraft to the Indian Air Force and 156 LCH Prachand helicopters to the Indian Army and Air Force, as stated by HAL in a press release.
He has also been credited with efforts to operationalise the LCA Tejas fleet within the IAF and to increase indigenous content in the programme. Under his leadership, HAL expanded into civil manufacturing and the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) segment. He oversaw the outsourcing of fuselage assemblies to private sector partners to scale up production capacity.
Educational Background
Ravi K holds a mechanical engineering degree from Malnad College of Engineering, Karnataka. He is also an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and IAS, Toulouse, France. Additionally, he serves as a nominee director on the board of Multi-Role Transport Aircraft Ltd.
Vision for HAL
Upon assuming charge, Ravi K stated that his focus would be on making HAL competitive in the global aerospace and defence market. He emphasised innovation, adoption of artificial intelligence, and operational efficiency as key drivers for the company’s growth.
