Pune APMC to Build Advanced Processing Unit to Protect Farmers from Price Crashes
Pune APMC to Build Advanced Processing Unit for Farmers

The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Pune has announced plans to develop an advanced processing unit on the Gultekdi Market Yard premises. This facility will process agriculture produce purchased from farmers into various products such as puree, pickle, and dried vegetables, aiming to stabilize farmers' incomes during volatile market conditions.

Addressing Price Volatility

Officials highlighted that farmers often face losses when prices of farm produce drop sharply due to market fluctuations. To counter this, the APMC will purchase produce directly from farmers at assured rates and send it to the processing unit. This initiative ensures that tillers receive fair compensation even when wholesale prices are low.

Project Progress and Support

The Maharashtra Cooperative Development Corporation is currently preparing a detailed project report for the unit, which is expected to be completed within one month. APMC director Sanoth Nangare has submitted a letter to the APMC chairman urging expedited implementation of the project. He emphasized that a successful unit would protect farmers' interests by safeguarding fair prices and also enable the APMC to establish its own brand for products like juice, jelly, jam, dry vegetables, pickles, and sauce.

Market sources note that vegetable prices often crash due to high supply, low demand, or crop damage. Farmers have long demanded a mechanism to guarantee proper prices. The APMC official stated, "The processing unit will be state-of-the-art, with advanced machinery to process perishable farm produce. The main objective is to provide confirmed prices to farmers. For example, if tomato prices drop alarmingly on a given day, the APMC will direct traders to purchase at a minimum rate, ensuring returns to farmers."

Collaboration with Private Sector

Some private units already operate on a similar model, and the APMC is seeking their support to execute the project. This collaboration aims to leverage expertise and resources for efficient implementation.
