Houston [US], June 12 (ANI): Ahead of their FIFA World Cup campaign opener against Curacao, Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck acknowledged the debutants as a solid team while asserting his side's favorite status. He emphasized that after consecutive group-stage exits in the last two tournaments, the team is determined to prove their quality.
Germany Favorites Despite Curacao's Strengths
The four-time world champions begin their quest for a record-equaling fifth title against Curacao on Sunday. Curacao, a self-governing part of the Netherlands with a population of just over 150,000, is the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup. All players and coach Dick Advocaat hold Dutch nationality.
Schlotterbeck stated, as quoted by Reuters: "We had a team discussion yesterday on Curacao, and it is a good team with players who have been trained in the Netherlands. But we are the favorites, and I am confident we will win the match."
Group E Challenges: Ivory Coast and Ecuador
Germany's subsequent group stage matches will be against Ivory Coast and Ecuador. The defender highlighted the team's blend of quality and experience: "We have a lot of quality, a lot of players at their peak, and a few playing their last World Cup. You have a mix that is really good. Everyone is just looking forward to it."
No Excuses in Houston Heat
The match in Houston is expected to see temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, but Schlotterbeck dismissed any excuses. Despite past disappointments, he stressed confidence over pressure: "There is no pressure. We are going into this with confidence, and on Sunday, we want to show how good we are."
He added: "There is no motivation to show everyone what we can do. We should not be hiding from anyone. We are a top, top, top team, and we have been showing the German virtues on the pitch once again after a very long time. We have discipline, passion, and ability to resist, and if we show our German virtues, then we are well placed."
