The Punjab Agricultural University has officially announced its schedule for the upcoming Kisan Melas. These important agricultural fairs will take place across seven districts in Punjab during March 2026.
Complete Itinerary for Farmers
PAU Director of Extension Education Dr. MS Bhullar provided the detailed calendar. The series of melas will commence on March 10 at Nagkalan-Jahangir in Amritsar district.
Subsequent events follow quickly:
- Rauni in Patiala district hosts its mela on March 12
- Ballowal Saunkhri welcomes farmers on March 14
- Faridkot organizes its agricultural fair on March 17
The university's main campus in Ludhiana will stage a special two-day event. This significant gathering occurs on March 20 and 21.
Final melas in the series include:
- Bathinda on March 24
- Gurdaspur on March 27
University Leadership Encourages Participation
Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of PAU, made a direct appeal to the farming community. He urged agriculturalists from Punjab and neighboring states to mark these dates.
"We need enthusiastic participation to make these farmers' fairs truly successful," emphasized Dr. Gosal.
Addressing Contemporary Agricultural Challenges
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted pressing issues facing modern agriculture. Water depletion and unpredictable climate patterns create substantial risks for crop production.
"These melas provide crucial opportunities," Dr. Gosal noted. "Farmers can gather the latest agricultural information to combat these challenges effectively."
Innovations Showcased at Melas
PAU continues to develop advanced agricultural solutions. The university introduces water-efficient and climate-resilient crop varieties regularly.
Early-maturing and high-yielding technologies promise to reshape Punjab's agricultural landscape. These innovations reaffirm PAU's commitment to farmer welfare.
Diversification Opportunities
Dr. Gosal revealed exciting developments in horticulture. Farmers can explore nouveau crops including various fruits like apple, dragon fruit, and strawberry.
Vegetable options now include five-coloured carrots and three-coloured bell peppers. Flower enthusiasts will find orchids, tulips, hyacinths, and Iris Hollandica among the offerings.
"These multi-coloured rich crop varieties pave the way for enhanced nutritional and economic security," disclosed the Vice-Chancellor.
Seasonal Significance of Kisan Melas
PAU organizes these biannual events with specific seasonal purposes. March melas primarily serve the kharif sowing season. Farmers traditionally flock to these fairs to purchase paddy and other seeds for kharif crops.
September events cater to the rabi cropping season with appropriate seeds and technologies. This systematic approach supports Punjab's agricultural calendar throughout the year.
The released schedule allows farmers to plan their visits well in advance. Agricultural communities across Punjab now have clear dates to coordinate their participation in these important knowledge-sharing events.
