Kolkata's Unusual Cold Snap Sparks Rush for Heaters, Geysers, and Winter Wear
Kolkata Cold Wave: Retailers Scramble as Demand Soars

An unexpected and persistent cold spell has gripped Kolkata, sending residents into a frantic search for warmth and catching the city's retail sector off guard. Unlike the typical mild winter days the city is accustomed to, the mercury has remained stubbornly low even during afternoons, leading to a dramatic spike in demand for heating appliances and winter clothing.

Retailers Caught Off Guard by Sustained Demand

The sustained cold weather, described as unusual for Kolkata, has resulted in a buying frenzy. Sales of room heaters have surged so significantly that a major electronics chain on C R Avenue was left with just a single unit in stock. The store manager expressed surprise, noting that such high demand for heaters is rare in Kolkata. This scene was mirrored in traditional electronics hubs like Ezra Street and Chandni Market, where customers formed queues outside shops selling heating appliances.

Traders reported a sharp spike in sales over the past week. Arvind Tiwary Baba of The Calcutta Electric Traders' Association confirmed the trend, stating, "It is after many years that we are witnessing such weather in Kolkata, and that, too, for such a prolonged period." He highlighted that sales of room heaters and geysers have been high since the last week of December, depleting stocks across many shops.

Winter Clothing Markets See Brisk Business

The chill has not only boosted electronics sales but also brought cheer to sellers of winter apparel. Traders specializing in thermal wear, jackets, and woollens for children and the elderly are experiencing brisk business. At the temporary woollen market in Wellington Square, the mood is one of pleasant surprise. Stall owner Anita Bhutia observed that while the number of stalls had dwindled in recent years due to low demand, this season has broken the pattern with robust sales.

Parents are particularly concerned, rushing to buy caps and earmuffs for their school-going children. Supriti Saha, a parent from central Kolkata, emphasized her routine: "I make sure my daughter's head and ears are fully covered before she leaves for school in the morning." This sentiment is widespread, adding to the rush in the markets.

Supply Chain Strains and Future Expectations

While prices for most appliances have remained stable, the limited availability has caused delays in delivery for some customers. Retailers are awaiting fresh consignments, but suppliers themselves are adjusting to the unexpected surge in orders. The entire supply chain, from manufacturers to local shopkeepers, is working to replenish stocks to meet the unprecedented demand driven by Kolkata's unusually cold winter.
