IGI Expands Gem Certification in Jaipur with Second Laboratory
IGI Opens Second Gem Lab in Jaipur

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has significantly bolstered its presence in India's gem and jewellery sector with the inauguration of its second laboratory in Jaipur. This strategic expansion, announced on Wednesday, aims to strengthen certification facilities for coloured gemstones, diamonds, and fine jewellery, positioning Jaipur as a key hub for quality assurance in the global market.

Enhanced Services and Strategic Location

The new laboratory is situated in the Sitapura Industrial Area, a dedicated manufacturing hub for gems and jewellery. This location complements IGI's first Jaipur facility on MI Road, offering enhanced proximity to the trade. According to Tehmasp Printer, Managing Director and Global CEO of IGI, this closeness enables faster turnaround times, improved communication, and superior service delivery for clients.

Advanced Certification Capabilities

The laboratory will provide comprehensive services, including origin determination and treatment detection for gemstones. These analyses will utilise state-of-the-art tools such as Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence, ensuring accurate and reliable certifications that meet international standards.

Skill Development and Education

In addition to testing services, the Sitapura centre will host the IGI School of Gemology. This initiative focuses on skill development through short-term, practical courses in diamonds and coloured stones, empowering professionals with hands-on training to excel in the industry.

Driving Factors Behind the Expansion

The expansion aligns with anticipated higher trade volumes following the India–EU Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to boost jewellery exports and imports. Printer highlighted that Jaipur's long-standing legacy in coloured gemstone trading, uncut Polki, and fine jewellery craftsmanship makes it a strategic location for IGI's growth.

Responding to Global Trends

Printer noted that IGI recognised the global shift in consumer preferences early on, particularly the rising demand for coloured gemstones. This surge is driven by increasing interest in unique fusion designs that combine multiple precious gemstones, personalised jewellery, and a growing appreciation for the rarity and beauty of coloured stones.

IGI's Market Position and Global Reach

With this new facility, IGI now operates 35 laboratories across 10 countries. The institute holds an estimated 80% share of the Indian certification market and about 25% globally, underscoring its leadership in gemological services. This expansion in Jaipur not only enhances local capabilities but also supports India's position as a major player in the international gems and jewellery trade.
