Chennai: In a major administrative overhaul aimed at accelerating renewable energy development, the state government has approved the formation of five dedicated renewable energy zones across Tamil Nadu to streamline the implementation of wind and solar power projects and improve services for investors.
Restructuring by TNGECL
The restructuring has been undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) in line with the government's objective of providing transparent, efficient and investor-friendly governance while strengthening the state's green energy ambitions.
As part of the exercise, the existing administrative structure of the Udumalpet and Tirunelveli Non-Conventional Energy Sources (NCES) circles were dismantled. Five renewable energy zones have now been established with headquarters at Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Madurai.
Zone Coverage Details
The Chennai zone will oversee renewable energy projects in the Chennai, Kancheepuram, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai electricity distribution circles. The Tiruchirappalli zone will cover Tiruchirappalli, Villupuram and Thanjavur circles, while the Tirunelveli and Coimbatore zones will cover their respective distribution circles. The Madurai zone will supervise projects in the Karur, Erode and Madurai distribution circles.
Improved Coordination and Monitoring
The reorganisation is intended to improve coordination and monitoring of wind and solar power projects, with Assistant Executive Engineers heading project administration and implementation activities in the respective zones. A dedicated project planning and monitoring mechanism has also been created at the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board headquarters to strengthen oversight of renewable energy initiatives.
Officials said the new structure would help reduce approval timelines for renewable energy projects, facilitate repowering of existing wind farms, expedite technical evaluations, and improve coordination for power evacuation infrastructure. The system is also expected to provide investors and power producers with transparent single-window services.
Support for Emerging Green Programs
The revamped administrative framework will additionally support the implementation of emerging green energy programmes, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), PM-KUSUM 2.0, PM Rooftop Solar, Model Solar Villages, solarisation of government buildings and proposed floating solar projects.
