Ongoing work on five bridges in south and central Mumbai has severely disrupted traffic in the island city. The closure of the Sion and Elphinstone Road flyovers, along with the partial closure of the Parel TT flyover, has diverted vehicles onto already congested roads below, leading to significant delays and bottlenecks. Narrower connecting roads, where motorists move at a snail's pace, are witnessing heavier congestion.
Impact of Construction Work
Similarly, work on widening the flyovers near Byculla and Dadar stations has narrowed the underlying carriageways, resulting in severe traffic jams. Pedestrians are also inconvenienced as construction material and debris lie on encroached footpaths. A key pathway for pedestrians under the Byculla flyover near Gloria Church has been closed.
Expected Improvement
A traffic police officer stated that conditions will improve once the Sion Road Overbridge (ROB) reopens in mid-August. Until then, commuters are advised to plan alternate routes and expect delays.
Detailed Breakdown of Affected Areas
Traffic disruptions begin at Byculla (East), where work outside the station on the Byculla flyover widening is underway. Pedestrians are forced to take detours. Further north, one side of the Parel TT flyover is shut for repairs, and the Elphinstone Road flyover is being reconstructed. Finally, the closure of the Sion bridge has disrupted connectivity between south Mumbai and the eastern suburbs.
