The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Kandla has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) India to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promote low-carbon maritime operations. The agreement was formalized in a ceremony attended by senior officials from both organizations.
Key Objectives of the MoU
The collaboration aims to achieve several critical goals in the maritime sector. First, it seeks to quantify and monitor GHG emissions from port operations and shipping activities. Second, it will develop a roadmap for transitioning to cleaner fuels and energy-efficient technologies. Third, the partnership will focus on capacity building and knowledge sharing to support the adoption of best practices in environmental sustainability.
Strategic Importance
DPA Kandla, one of India's major ports, handles significant cargo volumes and plays a vital role in the country's trade. The port's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint aligns with India's broader climate goals under the Paris Agreement. ICCT India brings technical expertise in clean transportation and emissions analysis, making this partnership a strategic move toward sustainable maritime logistics.
Expected Outcomes
- Emissions Inventory: A comprehensive baseline of GHG emissions from port operations and vessels will be created.
- Action Plan: A detailed plan for emission reduction targets and timelines will be developed.
- Technology Adoption: Implementation of low-carbon technologies such as shore power, energy-efficient cranes, and alternative fuel infrastructure.
- Policy Recommendations: Inputs for national and international maritime policies to encourage cleaner shipping.
Broader Context
This MoU is part of a growing trend among Indian ports to embrace sustainability. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has been promoting green port initiatives, including the 'Green Port Policy' and 'Harit Sagar' guidelines. DPA Kandla's partnership with ICCT India underscores the port's proactive approach to environmental stewardship.
ICCT India, a nonprofit research organization, has been instrumental in shaping clean vehicle and fuel policies globally. Its collaboration with DPA Kandla is expected to serve as a model for other ports in the region.
Both parties expressed optimism about the partnership's potential to drive meaningful change in the maritime sector. The MoU is valid for an initial period of three years, with provisions for renewal based on progress achieved.
