Farmers from several villages in Bicholim taluka have launched fresh protests against mining operations. This follows similar demonstrations in Piligao. Residents of Sarmanas, Mulgao and Poira are now raising their voices. Most protesters work as farmers.
Farmers Accuse Mining Company of Ignoring Demands
The farmers allege that mining companies continue operations without addressing local concerns. They claim these firms disregard villagers' demands completely.
Specific Grievances About Farmland Contamination
Sakharam Pednekar, a member of the Mulak Khazan farmers' association, explained the core issue. He stated that the mining company operating in Mayem failed to rejuvenate farmlands. Farmers specifically demand desilting of their agricultural fields.
Mining sludge has accumulated on these farmlands over many years. This contamination severely affects soil quality and farming productivity. Pednekar emphasized that their repeated requests have gone unanswered.
The company has not implemented any development work in the village, according to farmers. They feel completely neglected by the mining operators.
One-Month Ultimatum Issued
Farmers have now set a strict deadline for action. They demand the mining company desilt their farmlands within one month. Failure to comply will trigger stronger protests.
Threat of Escalated Action
Yeshwant Karbotkar, another farmer, warned about potential consequences. He stated that if the mining company management ignores their call, farmers will march directly to the mining site. They plan to launch a full-scale agitation there.
Rohidas Mainkar revealed previous attempts to resolve the issue. Farmers informed Chief Minister Pramod Sawant about the problem last year. Department officials even visited the contaminated farmlands in April.
However, no concrete action has followed these visits. The situation remains unchanged, frustrating local farmers who depend on these lands for their livelihood.
Growing Resistance Across Bicholim
The protest movement appears to be spreading across Bicholim taluka. What began in Piligao now encompasses multiple villages. Farmers from Sarmanas, Mulgao and Poira have joined the resistance.
Their primary demand remains clear and specific. They want immediate desilting of farmlands contaminated by mining activities. The one-month deadline adds urgency to their longstanding grievances.
