The long-awaited project to double the crucial Ara-Sasaram railway line in Bihar has finally shifted into high gear. After receiving formal approval, the work has entered an active execution phase, with authorities intensifying survey and land acquisition activities across the Bhojpur and Rohtas districts.
Groundwork Accelerates for Crucial Infrastructure Push
With the tendering process completed, the groundwork for this significant infrastructure push in western Bihar has commenced. A senior railway official confirmed that the Rs 700-crore project, spanning nearly 110 kilometers, is targeted for completion within three years. To fast-track the process, railway teams and district administration officials have launched a joint survey operation.
This collaborative effort focuses on land measurement, precise route mapping, and identifying potential bottleneck zones. Officials emphasize that the early completion of land acquisition is paramount for the project's timely execution. “The joint survey with district officials is aimed at ensuring quick handover of land to the construction agency. Speedy land acquisition will significantly reduce delays,” stated a senior railway official based in Ara.
Easing Congestion and Boosting Freight Movement
The doubling of the Ara-Sasaram section is strategically vital to decongest the heavily burdened Danapur–Pt DDU main line, which frequently suffers delays due to extremely high traffic density. Currently, only about six trains, including two express services, operate on the single-line section, often facing long waits for crossings.
An official posted in Buxar highlighted the broader impact: “Once doubled, this route will serve as an effective alternative corridor for both passenger and freight trains.” The project is particularly seen as a game-changer for freight logistics. It is expected to drastically improve coal transportation to the Chausa Thermal Power Plant, which currently involves high costs and time delays. Railways anticipate a substantial rise in earnings once heavy freight trains can operate seamlessly on the new double line.
Catalyst for Regional Growth and Connectivity
Beyond operational efficiency, the project promises wide-ranging benefits for the region. Post-doubling, railways plan to increase train frequency and speed on the Ara-Sasaram route, significantly cutting travel time and reducing operational disruptions. This enhanced connectivity is expected to benefit millions of passengers across Bhojpur, Rohtas, and Kaimur districts.
Local business communities are optimistic about the economic ripple effects. “Improved rail connectivity will strengthen employment, small industries, and market access,” said a representative of a local trade body in Ara. Residents believe better connectivity will also help reduce overall travel costs and enhance access to long-distance destinations, acting as a catalyst for comprehensive regional growth.
Railway authorities from the Hajipur zone confirmed that survey and land measurement are currently in progress. “Construction will gain momentum once this phase is completed,” an official said, confirming that preparatory works for the Ara–Sasaram doubling project, which falls under the Pt DDU Division, are proceeding as scheduled.
