Income Tax Department Launches Nationwide Survey Targeting Restaurant Sector for Tax Evasion

The Income Tax Department has initiated a comprehensive nationwide survey operation spanning 45 cities across India, including prominent urban centers like Noida, Ghaziabad, and Lucknow. This extensive action specifically targets the restaurant and food service industry over allegations of systematic manipulation of sales records to avoid tax payments.

AI-Driven Investigation Uncovers Widespread Manipulation

Officials revealed that this operation followed sophisticated artificial intelligence analysis that flagged numerous businesses suspected of manipulating records within their accounting systems and point-of-sale machines. The surveys were executed by the investigative wing of the Income Tax Department as part of an ongoing follow-up to a massive Rs 70,000-crore sales suppression probe linked to billing software manipulation designed to evade taxation.

Across the country, the department is currently surveying approximately 70 restaurants as part of this coordinated effort. The entire exercise was conducted under the direct supervision and directions of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, utilizing the authority granted under Section 133A of the Income Tax Act.

Key Establishments Targeted in Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, searches were conducted at several well-known establishments that have significant customer footfall. Among the prominent businesses surveyed were Bansal Bikaner in Bulandshahr, Agarwal Bikaneri Sweets in Noida, and Loknath Sweets in Ghaziabad. During these operations, officials collected substantial digital evidence including electronic records, accounting software data, and comprehensive server logs.

A preliminary analysis of the seized materials indicates that certain restaurant operators employed various technological methods to deliberately under-report their sales and conceal taxable income. Investigators discovered that some taxpayers systematically deleted transaction data at regular intervals to obscure their actual revenue. In more sophisticated cases, authorities found evidence of back-end manipulation of accounting software and the utilization of multiple databases allegedly designed to hide genuine sales figures.

Forensic Investigation Underway

The collected evidence is currently undergoing detailed forensic investigation. Authorities have stated that their final findings will determine the precise scale of the alleged tax evasion and identify all parties involved in these sophisticated schemes. This nationwide action follows an earlier crackdown in Telangana where detailed inspections and surveys were conducted at approximately 40 restaurants, with suspected evasion estimated to exceed Rs 490 crore.

Increasing Reliance on Technology for Tax Enforcement

Officials emphasized that with the growing adoption of technology in financial transactions, the Income Tax Department is increasingly depending on advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence to identify potential tax evasion patterns. The department has issued advisories to taxpayers who may have under-reported their income, encouraging them to voluntarily update their disclosures and pay outstanding dues promptly.

Authorities have clarified that timely compliance could help such taxpayers avoid severe penalties, legal consequences, and potential prosecution. This operation represents a significant shift toward technology-driven tax enforcement as the government seeks to curb revenue losses through sophisticated evasion techniques.
