Uttar Pradesh Sets Ambitious Economic Targets for 2047

In a bold move to transform its economic landscape, Uttar Pradesh has unveiled a vision to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030, a $2 trillion economy by 2036, and ultimately a $6 trillion economy by 2047. Achieving these milestones will necessitate an impressive annual average growth rate of approximately 16%, a significant leap from current levels.

Current Economic Standing and Vision Review

The state's present economy is valued at around $356 billion, accounting for more than 9% of India's total GDP. This data was a focal point in a recent meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who reviewed the draft vision document for Viksit UP-2047. The CM emphasized that this campaign is not merely about economic progress but a comprehensive transformation integrating social justice, inclusivity, and quality of life improvements.

"Viksit UP @2047 is a campaign for comprehensive transformation, in which equal importance has been given to social justice, inclusivity and improvement in quality of life along with economic progress. This vision should become an effective document of the state's development journey and secure UP a leading position in the goal of Viksit Bharat," Adityanath stated.

Three Pillars and Sectoral Strategies

Identifying Arthashakti, Janashakti, and Jeevanshakti as the three foundational pillars for a developed Uttar Pradesh, the CM highlighted the need for an integrated approach to strengthen key areas. He called for balanced and high-productivity-based growth across agriculture, industry, and services, supported by robust infrastructure, social sector development, and good governance.

  • Agriculture and Allied Sectors: The plan promotes smart agriculture, value-chain-based models, export-oriented production, and digital platforms. Animal husbandry and fisheries are recognized as vital to the rural economy, with a focus on scientific development, processing, and market linkages.
  • Industrial Development: Uttar Pradesh aims to evolve into a technology-based, export-oriented, and globally competitive manufacturing hub. Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) currently contribute about 46% to the state's manufacturing Gross Value Added (GVA), underscoring their importance.
  • Service Sector and Digital Economy: There is a push for rapid expansion in IT, IT-enabled services, artificial intelligence, tourism, and innovation-based sectors to boost the digital economy.

Implementation and Stakeholder Involvement

To ensure the vision document is practical and dynamic, the CM stressed the importance of incorporating over 98 lakh public suggestions from across the state, along with expert and stakeholder inputs. He directed that the document be divided into sector-wise missions with clear targets for 2030, 2036, and 2047, accompanied by implementable action plans.

"The vision document should be made comprehensive and participatory by analysing and incorporating more than 98 lakh public suggestions received from across the state, along with the views of experts, industry organisations and other stakeholders. It should be practical, result-oriented and time-bound, presenting a solid foundation for making the state a developed state by 2047," Adityanath elaborated.

Action Plans and Monitoring

All departments have been instructed to prepare detailed action plans with quarterly and annual targets, ensuring inter-sectoral coordination. Additionally, District Vision-2047 documents will be developed to align with local needs and resources. A list of major projects is to be compiled, with continuous monitoring to track progress and maintain momentum toward the ambitious economic goals.
