Kolkata Street Vendors Grapple with Soaring Coal Prices
In Kolkata, the vibrant culture of roadside food and tea stalls, many of which rely on traditional clay ovens, is under pressure due to a sharp rise in coal prices across the city. Vendors report that wholesalers and retailers have increased coal prices by Rs 2 per kilogram, citing escalating transport expenses and the ongoing CNG crisis as primary factors.
Vendors Voice Concerns Over Operational Costs
Gopal Chandra Das, a vendor who sells popular items like egg toast, ghugni, and boiled eggs, expressed his distress over the price hike. He stated, "Till Tuesday, I purchased coal for Rs 20 per kg. Today, the supplier charged me Rs 22. If coal prices continue to soar, how will I manage to run my shop effectively?" His sentiment echoes the worries of many small-scale entrepreneurs who depend on affordable fuel to sustain their businesses.
Market Dynamics and Price Adjustments
In wholesale markets, coal prices have risen from Rs 18 to Rs 20 per kg. However, in some areas, particularly where middlemen are involved, prices have been revised further to Rs 22 per kg. Rajesh Shau, a coal retailer in the Goltala area, explained the situation: "We source coal and sell it with a modest profit margin. Customers who place bulk orders can still access it at older rates, but smaller vendors face the brunt of these increases."
Official Stance and Broader Implications
Despite the local price surge, a Coal India official clarified that procurement costs at the main source have remained stable. This discrepancy highlights the impact of intermediary factors, such as logistics and regional crises, on end-user prices. The CNG crisis, in particular, has compounded issues, forcing many to seek alternative fuels and driving up demand for coal.
The rising coal prices threaten not only the profitability of street vendors but also the accessibility of affordable street food for Kolkata residents.
