Starbucks Implements Technology Team Layoffs in Strategic Restructuring Move
Starbucks has reportedly announced significant job cuts within its technology teams, as revealed through an internal communication to employees. According to documents viewed by The Seattle Times, the company is laying off staff as part of a comprehensive restructuring of its technology organization. This week, the affected employees were formally notified of the layoffs, which had been rumored for several days prior.
Details of the Layoffs and Company Statement
Starbucks has not disclosed the exact number of jobs that will be eliminated or confirmed whether the cuts are concentrated in Seattle. However, the company emphasized that this move is a component of a broader initiative to reorganize operations and allocate resources more effectively to high-priority areas. In an internal memo, Starbucks stated, "We are making structural changes to move faster, sharpen focus, and ensure we are set up to deliver on our most important priorities."
It is important to clarify that these layoffs are unrelated to a separate plan to relocate some technology jobs from Seattle to a new office in Nashville, Tennessee. This new facility is projected to eventually accommodate up to 2,000 positions over time.
Restructuring Under CEO Brian Niccol
The recent job cuts are part of a larger restructuring strategy spearheaded by Starbucks' new CEO, Brian Niccol, who joined the company in 2024. Niccol's leadership aims to address several challenges, including:
- Slowing sales growth
- Increasing profit pressures
- Operational inefficiencies in stores
As part of this turnaround effort, Starbucks has been actively investing in store upgrades and expanding into new markets. Concurrently, the company has implemented various cost-cutting measures across different business segments.
Technological Shifts and Leadership Changes
In December 2025, Starbucks appointed Anand Varadarajan as its chief technology officer (CTO). Varadarajan brings nearly two decades of experience from Amazon, where he led the global grocery business. His hiring is viewed as a strategic move to drive technology-led growth and enhance operational efficiency within the company.
Previous Workforce Reductions and Future Expectations
The latest layoffs add to a series of workforce reductions that Starbucks has undertaken over the past year. Previous actions include:
- Closure of several hundred stores across the United States and Canada, including more than 30 locations in Washington state.
- Layoffs of nearly 1,000 retail and non-retail workers in Seattle and Kent.
- Termination of approximately 1,100 corporate employees.
According to reports, further cuts are anticipated in the coming weeks as Starbucks continues to adjust its operations and cost structure to align with its strategic objectives.
