Manipur Assures Adequate Fuel, LPG Stocks; Urges No Panic Buying

Manipur Authorities Confirm Sufficient Fuel and LPG Supplies, Appeal for Calm Amid Global Concerns

In a joint press conference held on Friday at the Imphal divisional office of IOCL in Chingmeirong Sangakpham, officials from the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (CAF&PD) department, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) addressed public concerns regarding the availability of essential fuels in Manipur. CAF&PD Director K Bono Singh, alongside representatives from IOCL and PIB, emphatically stated that there is ample stock of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) as well as petrol and diesel across the state. They strongly urged consumers to refrain from panic booking and panic buying, which can disrupt supply chains unnecessarily.

Global Context and Local Assurance

During the media interaction, Director K Bono Singh acknowledged that the ongoing situation in West Asia has had a ripple effect on the global economy and petroleum markets. However, he highlighted India's resilience due to strategic planning and diversified imports. "In India, due to the planned management of the available stock and the inflow of petroleum products from five countries, the impact is less. In Manipur, there is adequate stock," he assured. This statement underscores the government's proactive measures to buffer against international volatility, ensuring stable supplies for domestic needs.

Robust Monitoring Mechanisms to Prevent Malpractices

To maintain transparency and prevent exploitation, the state government has implemented stringent monitoring systems. Since March 26, district-level committees have been established in every district, led by additional deputy commissioners or district supply officers. These committees are tasked with curbing hoarding and other malpractices. So far, they have conducted 224 surprise inspections, with no irregularities detected, demonstrating the effectiveness of these oversight efforts. This proactive approach aims to foster a fair distribution environment and build public trust.

Priority Sectors and Special Arrangements

The government has prioritized critical sectors to ensure uninterrupted services. Director Singh confirmed that 100% supply of LPG and PNG (piped natural gas) is guaranteed for the education and health sectors, reflecting a commitment to essential services. Additionally, special provisions have been made for vulnerable groups. Thirteen agencies have been identified to deliver 5 kg free-trade LPG cylinders to migrant workers, mirroring arrangements in other parts of the country. Migrant workers can access these cylinders by approaching the department through the designated agencies, ensuring their energy needs are met without hardship.

Addressing Regional Challenges and Misinformation

Responding to specific queries about reported shortages in Churachandpur district, the director addressed logistical challenges. Transportation of petrol, diesel, and LPG to the district was disrupted following a recent bomb attack at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district, which tragically resulted in two children killed and their mother injured. To mitigate this, "the government is making special arrangements to transport petroleum products using alternative routes to the district," he explained. This adaptive strategy highlights efforts to maintain supply continuity even in adverse circumstances.

Director Singh also appealed to the public to avoid spreading or believing misleading information that fuels anxiety and prompts panic buying. He reiterated that adequate stocks are available statewide and encouraged reliance on official updates. This call for calm is crucial to prevent artificial shortages and ensure equitable access for all residents.
